Gush Shalom / Uri and Rachel Avnery - Israel - 2001 Right Livelihood Award Recipient   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Gush Shalom was founded in 1993 as a new peace movement, which came into existence because the other Israeli peace movements had decided not to criticise the new Labour government.
Most importantly, Gush Shalom has been campaigning, along with other Israeli peace organisations, against the further extension of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Territories and, in particular, against the continuing demolition of Arab houses that is intended to make that extension possible.
Gush Shalom activists are regularly arrested and abused, although as Israelis their treatment is far better than that meted out to Palestinians, and their presence in situations of conflict undoubtedly does much to prevent the mistreatment of Palestinians.

A critique of Gush Shalom's peace programme
Presumably, Gush Shalom has not learned the lessons of Madrid, Oslo, Wye and Camp David, and believes that negotiators representing the Palestinian elite and the Israeli elite (and "international personalities") are capable of doing a decent job far from the scrutiny of the oppressed workers, farmers and refugees.
Gush Shalom appoints the captive Palestinian National Authority ("government of Palestine") as sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, with authority to recognize Israel, agree on "permanent borders", ignore the oppression of the Palestinian citizens of Israel and compromise the rights of the refugees.
Gush Shalom gives legitimacy to the "Green Line", which is the Armistice Line that recorded the military positions on a certain day in 1949, 57 years ago.

Witch hunt continues against Gush Shalom
Gush Shalom’s “heinous act” of sending a warning to specific officers continues to be the overriding issue on radio talk-shows.
Activists from Gush Shalom, the leftist peace group, have sent letters to 15 Israel Defense Forces officers, warning that the movement is collecting evidence about actions that took place under their command in the territories for submission to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, on suspicion that the officers committed war crimes.
A Gush Shalom spokesman told Ha’aretz that the movement was considering passing on the information it collected to The Hague “only if our appeals to the courts in Israel are to no avail.” But even with this reservation, the decision to warn IDF officers is problematic.

Gush Shalom Hebrew for Peace Bloc — is an organization led by journalist and former legislator Uri Avnery, who believes Israel must evacuate the West Bank and Gaza Strip and retreat to the borders it had before the 1967 Six-Day War.
Gush Shalom spokesman Adam Keller told JTA that the first letters were sent several months ago, but someone else — whom he did not name — saw fit to publicize them only now, in the midst of a wave of Palestinian terror.
Gush Shalom’s letters, sent to officers with ranks ranging from lieutenant to brigadier general, were signed by “Gush Shalom’s team for the collection of evidence against war criminals.” They were sent following specific complaints by Palestinian residents against the officers.
