In 1464 he came prominently forward in support of Bishop Kettil Karlsson Vasa in his struggle against Christian I. of Denmark, and showed great ability in winning over the peasants and making soldiers of them.
In 1513 the aged archbishop of Upsala, Jakob Ulfsson, resigned in favour of Gustaf Trolle, son of Erik Trolle, who was elected by the cathedral chapter and recommended to the pope by the regent on condition that the new archbishop should do him homage.
Unfortunately these two masterful young men (Trolle was twenty-seven, Sture barely twenty-three), who represented respectively the highest ecclesiastical and the highest civil authority in Sweden, were only too prone to carry on the family feud.

In June 1523, Gustaf Vasa became the elected king of Sweden, Gustavus I. His rule lasted for almost 40 years (1523-1560), and his descendants held the throne for 250 years, almost without interruption, until the Bernadotte dynasty was established in 1810.
Gustaf IV then went to Switzerland where he lived as a recluse until his death in 1837.
Gustaf IV was succeeded by his uncle, Charles XIII who ruled from 1809 until the beginning of the Bernadotte Dynasty in 1818.

Crown Prince Gustav of Sweden (1799 - 1877, later Gustaf Gustafsson von Holstein-Gottorp, Prince of Vasa) was the son of Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden and Frederica of Baden.
Gustaf also served as an officer to the Habsburgs of Austria, and in 1829, Emperor Francis II of Austria created him Prince of Vasa, and was made a Fieldmarshall-Lieutenant in the Austrian army in 1836

Recovered bones from the steersman show damage of a type that may be due to aspects of his work with the whipstaff (the section of the steering mechanism which was manipulated by the steersman).
