  Gustav Bonde
Even the popular Polish adventure of Charles X of Sweden was strenuously opposed by Bonde, though when once it was decided upon he materially assisted the king to find the means for carrying it on.
Bonde’s extraordinary tenacity of purpose enabled him for some years to carry out his programme, despite the opposition of the majority of the senate and his co-regents, who preferred the more adventurous methods of the chancellor Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, ultimately so ruinous to Sweden.
In his later years Bonde’s powers of resistance were weakened by sickness and mortification at the triumph of reckless extravagance, and he practically retired from the government some time before his death.

 Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie
After a careful education, completed by the usual grand tour, Magnus learned the art of war under Gustav Horn, and during the reign of Christina of Sweden (1644-1654), whose prime favourite he became, though the liaison was innocent enough, he was raised to the highest offices in the state and loaded with distinctions.
In 1646 he was sent at the head of an extraordinary mission to France, and on his return married the queen's cousin Marie Euphrosyne of Zweibrücken, who, being but a poor princess, benefited greatly by her wedding with the richest of the Swedish magnates.
During this period De la Gardie was the ruling spirit of the government and represented the party of warlike adventure as opposed to the party of peace and economy led by Counts Gustav Bonde and Per Brahe.

WHKMLA : History of Sweden, 1771-1792
The coup of 1772 which restored royal rule was possible because only two weeks earlier the non-noble estates had demanded that appointments to high offices should be made exclusively on the basis of merit and capability, thus in disregard of noble status.
Although Gustav III.'s rule generally is referred to as absolute, Riksdag remained an element of Sweden's political life, was again called to assemble in 1778/79, 1786 and 1789.
King Gustav III., not the least, himself was a part of cultural life, as his court became the stage for numerous balls etc. The scene where the king fell victim to an assassin in 1792, was a masquerade ball staged in Stockholm's opera house.

The finest of the portraits is that of Gustav I, King of Sweden, showing him as ponderous, suspicious and bad-tempered, playing irritably with his gold chain; this picture is a psychological study, although forced into the formal stiffness of state-portrait style.
As Arendtz was also a portrait painter in his own right, he may have improved on the series of pictures that he took as his models.
The portrait of Carl Bonde depicts a tense, anxious, sensitive face, which contrasts with the still, formal posture of the body and the characteristic flatness and absence of volume and perspective in the rest of the canvas.

The rich history of the Hässelby Castle begins on land that was settled over 2,000 years ago and was once home to the Vikings, whose burial mounds near the outer castle buildings can still be seen today.
When Karl Bonde took possession of this land in 1636, he called upon architect Simon de la Vallée, who had been appointed architect of the Crown in 1639, to design Hässelby Castle.
After Karl Bonde´s death in 1652, Gustav Bonde, later a Privy Councilor and Lord High Treasurer, inherited Hässelby, which was then completed under direction of Simon´s son, Jean de la Vallée.
