Gustav Leonhardt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gustav Leonhardt (born May 30, 1928) is a highly acclaimed Dutch keyboard player, conductor, musicologist, teacher and editor.
From 1947 to 1950 Gustav Leonhardt studied organ and harpsichord with Eduard Müller at the Schola Cantorum in Basel.
Although Leonhardt has performed and conducted a diversity of music from the Baroque and Classical music era periods, he is particularly known for his recording series, which he shared with Harnoncourt, of Bach's complete cantatas spanning twenty years, from 1971 to 1990.

Leonhardt and Bach is one of those pairings that defies description, so intimately are the two connected.
While Leonhardt does not emphasise the virtuosity inherent in the writing, he has such command of his technical facility that there is plenty of drama when he wants it.
Interestingly, in this recording Leonhardt was employing a reproduction harpsichord; a copy from 1975 by William Dowd, of an instrument of 1730 by the Parisian Blanchet.

Gustav Leonhardt's way with Bach is uniquely persuasive, and Herbert Tachezi's single performance, that of the great D Minor Concerto, is pretty powerful too.
Leonhardt includes (in BWV 1060, 1062 and 1065) his former teacher from the Schola Cantorum in Basle, Eduard Mueller (the student modestly playing second harpsichord to his mentor in 1060 and 1065) while his own first-generation students Anneke Uittenbosch and Alan Curtis join him for BWV 1061, 1063-1065.
Leonhardt's performances of six of the seven great solo concerti (BWV 1053-1058), plus his own reconstruction of an eighth (BWV 1059, of which only nine bars were written out by Bach - the rest was assembled by Leonhardt from the instrumental movements contained in Cantata BWV 35), are classics of the recorded harpsichord repertoire.

Remastering of the legendary Leonhardt interpretation--once again one can now savor his relatively cool but absolutely sensitive approach to the music--listen to, for example, his playing of the long cadenza in the fifth concerto to see how he can make the music "roll by itself" without the need of any rhythmic distortion.

Rigorously shorn of suspense and drama, the narrative (the death of Bach's children, problems with patrons, his encroaching blindness) is tossed off as narration over authentic letters and engravings, and the notion of "acting" is rejected as ruthlessly as in the sternest Bresson—as Mr.
Bach, respectively, harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt, and singer Christiane Lang are asked not to "play" characters, but to lend their bodies and voices to the camera, every inflection scrubbed off.
Just as the powdered wigs cloak the most modern of inquiries, so does the film's bareness quake with emotion: Leonhardt's Bach is kept at a distance, often a barely noticeable element in the ravishing compositions, yet continually alive through the music that guides him towards the final sublimity of darkness before God.

~ Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (Composer), Gustav Leonhardt (Conductor), Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (Orchestra), Anner Bylsma (Performer)
There is enough action in these pieces to appeal to lovers of Romantic music, enough fluid melody and evenness of structure to appeal to lovers of the Baroque, and enough plain musical pleasure to be had for anyone willing to take C.P.E. Bach on his own merits.
The symphonies are quirky, dramatic, sometimes even a bit bizarre, and yet balanced; the cello concerti have that quality of galant-mixed-with-disquiet that pops up often in the works of C.P.E. The musicians are as tasteful and in command as Leonhardt is himself when alone at the keyboard.
