Gustav Meyrink's "The Green Face" is an exhilarating vision of apocalypse.
Meyrink reworks and amplifies the legend of the Wandering Jew (a being fated to walk the earth from the days of Christ till the end of time), portraying his Chidher Green as a harbinger of cataclysmic change both for the novel's protagonist, Fortunatus Hauberrisser, and for Amsterdam in general.
Also, the route Hauberrisser must take through the story is Meyrink's familiar path of enlightenment-a moment of sudden spiritual awareness followed by a period of isolation, which at last leads to promises of a mystical marriage.

The Literary Gothic | Gustav Meyrink
There is of course no "definitive" treatment of a legend as old and rich in tradition as that of the Golem; Meyrink's version, not really supernaturalist or particularly "Jewish" at all, is a convoluted and complex psychological study as much as — or more than — it is any kind of thriller.
According to E. Bleiler, who should know, Meyrink is "perhaps the foremost modern writer of supernatural novels."
I haven't been able to find an English e-text of this work (originally written in German) on the Web; indeed, much of the information about Meyrink is in languages I don't speak.

The Golem by Gustav Meyrink, published by Tartarus Press
is Gustav Meyrink’s masterly 1915 retelling of the legend of the blasphemous creation of an artificial man by Rabbi Loew in the Prague ghetto of the sixteenth century.
But Meyrink’s novel is much more than a variation on the Frankenstein or sorcerer’s apprentice theme.
It is also an exploration of personal identity and the horror inherent in the search for self-knowledge.

  Background on the Golem Legends
1928) by the Bavarian writer Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932), who spent many years in Prague.
Meyrink's book, notable for its detailed description and nightmare atmosphere, was a terrifying allegory about man's reduction to an automaton by the pressures of modern society.
This dissertation examines the ways in which contemporary Jewish American authors rewrite traditional Jewish narratives to both reflect and revise current conceptions of the self and the Jew.
