Nachtigal, Sohn eines Pfarrers, studierte zunächst Medizin und wurde 1858 preußischer Militärarzt in Köln.
Februar 1869 von Tripolis aus auf, durchquerte die Sahara, hielt sich in Fessan auf und ging dann in das vorher von keinem Weißen betretene Gebiet der Tibbu, das Land Tibesti.
1882 wurde Nachtigal von Reichskanzler Otto von Bismarck zum Generalkonsul in Tunis und zum Reichsbeauftragten für Togo und Kamerun ernannt.

GUSTAV NACHTIGAL (1834-1885), German explorer in Central Africa, son of a Lutheran pastor, was born at Eichstedt in the Mark of Brandenburg, on the 23rd of February 1834.
After medical study at the universities of Halle, Wiirzburg and Greifswald, he practised for a few years as a military surgeon.
