Sebes had seen how the great Italy and Austria sides of the 1930s were largely based on one, or at most two clubs, and realised what an opportunity nationalisation presented.
Sebes might have been pulling the strings, but Puskás was his representative on the field - the man he trusted to make tactical changes during a game.
Gusztáv Sebes soon adopted the tactic for the national team; Guttman would later carry it with him to Brazil, where it formed the tactical basis for the gloriously fluid teams of Pelé, Jairzinho and Garrincha.

Gustav Sebes, the deputy sports minister, who presided over the squad, decided that Palotai, in the deep centre-forward role, had done so well in the Olympics that he would keep him there.
As Sebes recalled, "He seemed to complement that partnership between Puskas and Kocsis perfectly, and beautiful passes began to flow between the three of them.
"I played Hidegkuti," remembered Sebes, "even though he was only half fit, because I needed his fine technique and tactical guile to penetrate the world's toughest defence." Hidegkuti played, and scored, in the first half, after which Palotai took his place.

This innovation was brought to the attention of the world by one of the best and most attractive sides of the century, the Hungarian national team coached by Gustav Sebes in the 50s.
What Sebes did, like a number of other coaches, for example Germany's Sepp Herberger, was to vary the WM system.
For example, the Hungarians would use a fairly defensive midfielder, an inside forward who was practically up with the front line, or a full back who would move over towards the middle when an attack was coming down the other side to provide back-up for the stopper.

Previously, the main tactical system had involved the use of the 'W-M' formation - a 3-2-2-3 template, with two full-backs and a centre-half as the main defenders, two defensive half-backs, two attacking inside-forwards further up the field, and two wingers and a centre-forward as the main frontrunners.
This pattern was adopted by Sebes for the Hungarian national side and the outcome caused havoc for opponents accustomed to more rigid tactical formations.
The two inside-forwards operated as additional frontrunners, and the withdrawn centre-forward meant that opposing centre-halves, who usually marked him, were utterly confused as to their role and were drawn out of position leaving huge gaps for the four-man forward line to exploit.
