Today in Technology History - Aug 13
All the asteroids that had been discovered orbited the sun in a swath of space between Mars and Jupiter dubbed the "asteroid belt," and it was believed that no asteroid came any closer to Earth than 35 million miles.
But on August 13, 1898, a German astronomer named Gustav Witt discovered an asteroid which left the asteroid belt and came much closer to Earth than any other yet discovered; at its closest, it could be just 14 million miles from Earth -- right next door.
Since the asteroid came closer to Earth than either of our neighboring planets, Venus and Mars, Witt named it after the child of Venus and Mars in Greek mythology: Eros.
