He must sleep in dirt dug up from the graves of victims of the Black Death (bubonic plague), and when he makes his move from his castle to the city, his coffins full of this dirt bring death everywhere he goes.
Gustav Von Wangenheim is the young man, who with his moral wife Helen (Greta Schroeder), must stop the evil from spreading.

Murnau's landmark vampire film Nosferatu isn't merely a variation on Bram Stoker's Dracula: it's a direct steal, so much so that Stoker's widow went to court, demanding in vain that the Murnau film be suppressed and destroyed.
The film begins in the Carpathian mountains, where real estate agent Hutter (Gustav von Wagenheim) has arrived to close a sale with the reclusive Herr Orlok (Max Schreck).

A young real estate clerk (Gustav von Wangenheim) is dispatched to distant lands to sell an abandoned property (which happens to be across the street from his own house) to an eccentric Count (Max Schreck).
The clerk, named Hutter, leaves his newlywed wife (Greta Schröder -- who surely has the largest hands of any cinematic heroine ever) behind, and encounters a series of increasingly frightened townsfolk as he grows nearer to Count Orlok's castle.

This version uses Murnau's original names, instead of the names from the Stoker novel that appear in most public domain releases (the Image disc also uses Murnau's names).
Young solicitor Hutter (Gustav van Wangenheim) is sent by his employer, Knock (Alexander Granach) to the castle of Count Orlok (Max Schreck) in Varna to seal a real estate deal for the abandoned house across from Hutter's own.
Von Wangenheim far overplays his essentially comic role; the whole would have been much better if he had underplayed a bit or been a shade more naturalistic.

With his pointed ears (preceding Spock by nearly 50 years) and steadily increasing bony, clawlike fingers, Orlock is far more animalistic than the more recent incarnations of the Count.
In Freudian terms, the Count represents the id, which threatens the boylike Thomas (Gustav von Wangenheim) while attracting and repelling his wife Ellen (Greta Schröeder).

The film surprised me with the strength of its visual style and the different manner in which it approached the vampire legend.
Nosferatu opens in Breman, Germany by introducing us to estate agent Thomas Hutter (Jonathan Harker in Stoker's novel, played by Gustav von Wangenheim) and his young wife, Ellen (Stoker's Mina, played by Greta Schröder).

The movie's two main strengths are Max Schreck's compelling performance, as the eerily inhuman vampire, and Murnau's unparallelled ability to blend naturalistic and expressionistic elements.
Thanks to them, the modern viewer is able to overlook some of the film's more awkward moments, such as Gustav Von Wangenheim's horribly mannered performance, or Murnau's quaintly comic use of accelerated motion to suggest the vampire's unnatural speed.

Nosferatu's Jonathan Harker character is Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim), a real estate employee who receives an unusual assigment from his boss, the troll-like Knock (Alexander Granach).
Knock tells Hutter that a new client, Count Orlok, wishes to leave his remote castle home and take up new lodgings nearby — in fact, Knock suggests, the deserted house across the street from Hutter's would be ideal.
As Hutter, von Wangenheim grins and gambols through the early scenes like a man on too much mood-enhancing medication.

 Nosferatu (1922)
The plot of course, follows the typical plot of the novel.
Jonathan Harker, in this instance, renamed Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) travels to the Carpathian mountains at the order of his boss, Knock (Alexander Granach) to visit the Count Orlok who is moving to Bremen, where he will develop an obsession with Hutter’s wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder).
We’re all familiar with it, but the 1922 film has enough differences from the novel to keep it fresh to this day.
