Uppsala University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the patronage of the university chancellor Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, Rudbeck was made full professor in 1660, was elected rector for two terms, despite his youth, and started a revision of the work of the other professors and a building spree with himself as architect.
He also modified Gustavianum, designed a new conservatory for Linnaeus' botanical garden and built the new Consistory house, which was to be the administrative core of the university.
Another magnificent royal donation was that of the large baroque garden of the castle, given by Gustavus III to the university when it was obvious that the old botanical garden was insufficient.

The Gustavianum and its Anatomical Theatre
The Gustavianum would contain a great deal: first and foremost lecture halls, but also a printing press for books, a refectory for students (the so-called ‘community’), a number of student rooms, etc. Later on a library was established together with an assembly hall for the board of the University.
In the centuries that followed the Gustavianum served many functions in teaching, and when the Academia Carolina was torn down in 1778, it became the main building of the University.
During the 20th century the Gustavianum has primarily housed departments such as art, ancient cultures, and archeology as well as museum collections related to these subjects.

 Olaus Rudbeck Summary
Rudbeck was one of two early discoverers of the lymphatic system in 1651 (see History of anatomy in the 17th and 18th centuries) when he was young, contributing to the success of his early career.
To facilitate his studies of human anatomy, he had a cupola built on top of Gustavianum, the university house, and in it was built an arena-like Theatrum anatomicum, where dissection could be carried out in front of students.
The house, which stands in front of the cathedral, is now called Gustavianum and is still part of the university.

In 1566, King Eric XIV donated the old chapter house, south of the Uppsala Cathedral, to be used for lectures.
After the construction of the Gustavianum in the 1620s, this building was referred to as the Collegium vetus or Gamla akademien ("the old academy"), until it was renamed in 1704 through a decision of the consistory (university board) and called the Academia Carolina, in honour of kings Charles IX, Charles XI and Charles XII.
The library remained in Gustavianum, which luckily escaped the flames in 1702, until Carolina Rediviva was completed in 1841.
