Guster is often recognized for their choice of instruments during their earlier years: two members playing acoustic guitars and one member playing drums and various percussion.
Guster's sound is also defined by their vocal harmonies, with both Miller and Gardner singing lead vocals on different songs; in songs such as "What You Wish For" and "Happier," the two members sing different lyrics simultaneously.

Pops, Guster make quite an edgy team - The Boston Globe
Guster -- formed at Tufts University in the early '90s by singer-guitarists Ryan Miller and Adam Gardner and percussionist Brian Rosenworcel, and fleshed out into a quartet for the Pops gig -- found some new and unlikely fans among the older set.
Beyond the novelty appeal, the collaboration between the orchestra and the rock band was an artistic mixed bag.
Happily, the entire wind section was redeemed when one of their ranks loosed a prog-rock solo worthy of Jethro Tull's Ian Andersen during fan favorite ''Fa Fa." Screams -- the likes of which this venue has surely never heard -- ensued.

Lost & Gone Forever is not only Guster's best-sounding record, it's among their most consistent, filled with some of their strongest, catchiest tunes.
Guster has a sound that at first seems like it has too many things going on at once, but you soon realize that there really isn't much at all.
The best songs on the album would have to be "Barrel Of A Gun", "Fa Fa", "Center Of Attention", and "Happier." Though Guster would really only appeal to those who enjoy mellow rock, it is great for relaxing after a hard day.

The songs are somewhat constrained by the band and producer's inexperience, but Guster proves it's better to struggle a bit with ambitious music than play mediocre material well.
