A 65-year-old retired government servant and a resident of Mehmoodabad, Zafar Ali, told The News that in 1992 he was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus due to massive consumption of betel nuts and paan.
Gutka itself is a mixture of ground betel nuts (supari), tobacco and flavourings.
He disclosed that he had been a regular chewer of gutka for the past five years and was not aware of the severe impacts it has on oral health.

Justice S N Kapoor of the Delhi High Court has asked the assistant registrar of trade marks (ARTM) to clarify whether the word gutka is a generic name for tobacco or whether it is an invention over which the innovator has exclusive rights.
Prince Gutka had claimed that it had an exclusive right over the gutka as a trade mark claiming that it had "invented" its use for pan masala, ilachi, supari in 1971.
Prince Gutka was the first to apply for the trade mark before the ARTM in 1977, according to its counsel, Mohan Singh.
