Goo Goo Dolls: Gutterflower - PopMatters Music Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
What critics of the 'new' incarnation of the band tend to forget is that although ballads do comprise a bigger chunk of their more recent albums, the Goo Goo Dolls still rock as hard as they ever did, but these days their music is stained more by inspiration rather than perspiration.
The first single, "Here Is Gone", is a case in point, combining subtle acoustics and a moody, atmospheric vibe to convey what appears to be a deeply personal tale revolving around the complexities of modern relationships.
Gutterflower will undoubtedly take the Goo Goo Dolls to greater success, and deservedly so, such is it's quality and consistency.

 The GooHive - Gutterflower review
The Goo Goo Dolls' seventh studio album, Gutterflower, pays homage to their roots as well as catapulting their song writing to a new level.
Gutterflower, their fourth for a major label, comprises 12 tunes written by vocalists/songwriters John Rzeznik and Robby Takac.
The songwriting boasts a strong dose of confidence, making Gutterflower an adventure that today's pop/rock aficionados will want to add to their ever-growing collection.

Now, on Gutterflower, the band's first album of new material in more than three years, the Goos attempt to split the difference, for the most part, successfully.
There's nothing wrong with that, although, at thirty-six, Rzeznik is edging toward the outer reaches of his ability to embody those emotions and make them credible.
Gutterflower proves once again that they are masters at crafting instantly appealing pop songs, admittedly no small gift in itself.

GOO GOO DOLLS: Gutterflower (Warner Brothers)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Johnny Rzeznik's moody delivery works for him on "It's Over," but it is "Sympathy" that is the raw surprise, an acoustic tinged cut that seems to be fighting the urge to pick up the pace, adding a few loud guitars to the mix.
As usual, rounding out Gutterflower are tracks such as "Up, Up, Up," You Never Know," "Smash," and "Tucked Away," all written and sung by bass player and sometimes vocalist, Robby Takac.
When Takac takes the lead it has always seemed like two separate bands were at work, if only to adhere to the unwritten rule of "you sing what you write." While Takac's turns are admittedly peppier than ever before, even his best tune is still a far cry from top 40 territory.

Gutterflower, for better or worse, is a perfectly executed encapsulation of the unexciting state of mainstream rock in 2002.

On Gutterflower, the follow-up to Dizzy (not including the compilation CD, What I Learned About Opinion, Art and Commerce) the Goos managed to keep up the passion.
Produced by Rob Cavallo, the twelve tracks on Gutterflower are quite likely to push the Goo Goo Dolls further into the public consciousness and sell a zillion CDs.
Although most music fans with any degree of taste generally wanna puke at high gloss corporate rock acts such as this one, the Goos prove that real rock is not about the label or the shine.

Gutterflower is a definite improvement from the band's ultra-drab record, Dizzy Up The Girl.
The mundane simplicity of "Tucked Away" sticks to the bands comfortable sounds of old with the simple melodies and driving rhythms, and album closer "Truth Is A Whisper" ends things on a bittersweet note with the clear alternative music providing a backbone to the troubled lyrics.
In the end, Gutterflower leaves the impression of a good album that could have been better.

Gutterflower is a very similar record to the band's last.
But while upon first listen all might seem rosy, underneath lies a fantastic depth of hurt, perhaps drawn from more personal circumstances than the minutiae of touring and greatest hits support.
One can't help but wonder how much of Gutterflower comes directly from Rzeznik's personal tragedy, but whatever the case we feel his pain.

The Collegian Online: “Gutterflower” is from the gutter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The Goo Goo Dolls have the potential to be a truly outstanding musical entity, but unfortunately, they are content to rest on their laurels (such as the hits "Black Balloon," "Iris" and "Slide") and produce mediocre music such as "Gutterflower." The result is an amalgam of every aspect of musical popular culture.
While "Gutterflower" is acutely dexterous at eschewing the task at hand, their advertising campaign is even better.
Although I strongly believe that "Gutterflower" is a worthless record, I would still suggest listening to it for yourself.

Gutterflower by Goo Goo Dolls CD
When the Goo Goo Dolls solidified their place in the pop mainstream with 1998's DIZZY UP THE GIRL, one of the casualties was frontman Johnny Rzeznik's marriage.
For the band's 2002 follow-up GUTTERFLOWER, Rzeznik channeled his feelings into a set of songs steeped in the Goo's mastery of hook-ridden, rock-edged pop.
Bassist Robby Takac claims a third of the songwriting credit on GUTTERFLOWER and proves to be as talented as his Rzeznik at crafting memorable cuts.

On the surface, the Goo Goo Dolls' Gutterflower is a seamless continuation of 1998's Dizzy Up the Girl, with sinewy guitars; muscular, anthemic choruses; and Johnny Rzeznik's perfectly articulated rasping vocals.
As a result, Gutterflower almost has the feel of a concept album about love gone wrong, with Rzeznik providing anxious commentary rife with images of dislocation and agitation.
"Gutterflower" marks a return to the more basic, stripped down sound of "A Boy Named Goo" era Goo Goo Dolls.

So, Gutterflower, their first album in four years, was treated with the utmost care, crafted and polished on the level of a superstar release -- thereby giving a glossy sheen to a record that, at its core, is another Goo Goo Dolls album.
Yes, there may be some darker currents roiling underneath the surface in Johnny Rzeznik's lyrics, but when the production glistens like this, it takes some deliberate, intensive listening on the part of the audience in order to discern it.
Still, it has given them a good, professional rock record, one that sells their sound as if it was as the most commercial imaginable, resulting in one of their most consistent albums.

For its eighth album, “Gutterflower,” it seems the band made a seamless continuation of “Dizzy.”; However, upon closer inspection, the muscular, anthemic choruses are there, but Johnny Rzeznik’s lyrics are much darker, no doubt due to Rzeznik’s recent divorce.
“Gutterflower” almost has the feel of a concept album about love gone wrong, with Rzeznik providing anxious commentary rife with images of dislocation and agitation.

It may have been four years since the release of the Goo Goo Dolls' immensely popular Dizzy Up the Girl disc, but the surprises are few and far between on the band's follow-up Gutterflower.
Fans are guaranteed the epic rock/pop combination and occasionally stirring acoustic outing they've grown to love, along with primary singer John Rzeznik's vocal blend of grit and urgency.
Such a mechanical vibe resonates on other cuts, including "Think About Me" and "What Do You Need," but at least they're balanced out by the stripped-down feel of "Sympathy" and "It's Over." It's on those two tunes that the Goo Goo Dolls return to the organic alternative balladry that rocket-launched "Name" onto the charts.
