Carbonneau was drafted 44th overall in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens.
His strong play as a defensive forward helped the Canadiens to a Stanley Cup championship in 1986, followed by three Frank J. Selke Trophy wins in 1988, 1989, and 1992.
After a brief period as an assistant coach with the Canadiens, Carbonneau moved back to the Dallas Stars with whom he is currently an assistant General Manager.

DALLAS (CP) -- Assistant coach Guy Carbonneau has left the Montreal Canadiens to accept a front-office post with the Dallas Stars and the former Habs star says Quebec's language laws were part of the reason for leaving.
 Carbonneau began his NHL career with Montreal in 1982 and spent 12 seasons with the Canadiens, serving as captain from 1989 to 1994.
Carbonneau also played in 231 career playoff games, participating in five Stanley Cup finals and winning three (1986 and 1993 with Montreal, 1999 with Dallas).
