Guy Mitchell was born Al Cernick on February 27, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan.
Mitchell was all of those things and more, in some ways a trail- blazer-- he was the first major recording artist whose career was crafted in the studio, by a record company, and sold to the public by way of records and the radio, not concerts.
Mitchell's recording career was made, although his performing career needed work--he'd hardly had the chance to develop a serious stage act or effective persona when he was booked into some of the biggest clubs in New York, and roundly criticized for what some onlookers felt were amateurish aspects of his presentation.

Guy Mitchell (February 22, 1927-July 1, 1999) was an American pop singer, who was even more successful in the United Kingdom than his homeland, despite being an international recording star of the 1950's with five #1 singles.
Mitchell's recording career was made, although his performing career needed work especially because his live performances didn't match the highly produced sound of his recordings.
Guy was in regular demand for charity concert appearances and in the 1990's these included the Desert Charities All Star Concert in Palm Springs with Bob Hope, Howard Keel, Kathryn Grayson and Kay Starr.

[Exotica] [obit] Billy Guy, Billy Mitchell
Guy who was the exuberant lead singer on the 1957 song "Searchin'," which featured an "alley" piano style — essentially two bass notes played alternately on every second beat — and suitably rough vocal support from the rest of the group.
Guy, who wrote several songs himself, including the group's hits "Wake Me Shake Me" and "Wild One," said the wackier songs like "Yakety Yak" could be done only by a special mix of voices like the Coasters.' "It was hard to find voices," he told the Milwaukee newspaper.
Mitchell is survived by five children, William, Tracey, Robert, Victoria and Robin Mitchell, all of Washington; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mitchell, a past "Citizen of the Year" in Tupelo, as was his father, said the firm has stressed and continues to stress deep community involvement in volunteer work and civic affairs.

GUY MITCHELL was born in Detroit on 22nd February, 1927.
Guy had always loved the 'great outdoors' - as a young man he used to ride in rodeos - and his interest in and knowledge of horses was second to none.
At the end of Guy's 15 minute spot the audience made it clear that he was far from being a forgotten man. As a result Guy was tempted back into the recording studios and, in 1982, an album of many of Guy's hits, newly recorded in stereo, reached No. 2 in the Dutch hit parade.

Guy's biggest hit - number one in both Britain and America - was Singing the blues, which was originally recorded by a friend of Guy's, the country singer Marty Robbins, who had an American top twenty hit with it.
Guy was reluctant to record the song but eventually did so ant it is clear that the public wanted his version of the song although I enjoy both versions and I'm not sure why his version did so much better than Marty's.
Strangely enough, Guy Mitchell's blend of 50s country, folk and rockabilly was more successful, chart wise, in the UK than in his US homeland, and not even Tommy Steele's version of "Singin' The Blues" prevented his from reaching the No 1 spot.

Guy had many American hits but his record was patchy as many of them made the top thirty, even the top twenty, but most failed to make the top ten although some of those that did were hugely successful.
Any Mitchell fan would be hard pushed to decide which of these tracks to omit to allow space for other Mitchell classics not included - indeed it would take 4 CD's to satisfy most of his vast army of followers.
Since his death, Guy has remained a well-loved and much listened to artist and this collection is a superb reminder of his art and his way of crafting even the silliest of songs into a classic.
