Topic: Guy of Spoleto

Guy of Spoleto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 842, the former Duchy of Spoleto, which had been donated to the Papacy by Charlemagne, was resurrected by the Franks to be held against Byzantine governors to the south, as a Frankish border territory by a dependent margrave.
In 883, Guy reunited the dukedom, henceforth as the Duchy of Spoleto and Camerino.
Guy's power never extended over much hereditary lands, which offered stark illustration of the fact that the imperial title, with its pretentions of universal rule, had by the end of the ninth century become merely a token of the Pope's favour, to be fought over by various Italian nobles.

 Formosus - LoveToKnow 1911
At that time the Holy See was engaged in a struggle against the oppression of the princes of Spoleto, and a powerful party in Rome was eager to obtain the intervention of Arnulf, king of Germany, against these dangerous neighbours.
Formosus himself shared this view; but he was forced to yield to circumstances and to consecrate as emperor Lambert, the young son of Guy of Spoleto.
The fundamental factor in these dissensions was the rivalry between the princes of Spoleto and the Carolingian house, represented by the king of Germany.

The best way, therefore, to truly grasp Spoleto Festival USA 2006 would be to read the Spoletobuzz Blog from its beginning on May 1 to its fevered end last weekend, with regular dips into the 12 audio podcasts I recorded with festival artists and lots of side-trips into Ida Becker’s Spoleto Scene blog.
A highlight of Spoleto’s Opening Ceremony was a weird musical performance that consisted of 13 cars with speakers on their roofs performing a new work, Car-illon Fanfare, created by minimalist composer Philip Glass in honor of the festival’s 30th anniversary.
All five of Spoleto’s theatre productions this year were memorable for, among other things, dynamiting the fourth wall — that imaginary barrier between audience and performer that playwrights throughout history have used to create the illusion of a separate reality on stage.

My dear friend Bruna suggested that we drive out to Spoleto for a day and I readily agreed.
Most of the time the answer was "Piazza Libertà" which is where the Roman Theater is. I was getting frustrated and was ready to say "Forget it, let's go home." But, an older gentleman had overheard her question to another younger guy and stepped in.
