  After Genghis Khan
Pending a kurultai to elect Ogedei's successor, his widow Toregene Khatun assumed power and proceeded to ensure the election of her son Guyuk by the kurultai.
Batu was unwilling to accept Guyuk as Great Khan, but did not possess the power in the kurultai to procure his own election.
Guyuk died in 1248, only two years after his election, on his way west apparently to force Batu to acknowledge his authority, and his widow Oghul Ghaymish assumed power pending the meeting of the kurultai; unfortunately for her, she could not keep the power.

Güyük Khan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Due to Guyuk's early death, Mongol family politics caused the Mongol efforts to be directed against South China, which was eventually conquered in the time of Kublai Khan.
The reign of Güyük, then, showed that the family split between Batu's line, the descendants of Jöchi, and the rest of the family might well be the fatal flaw for the unity of all the khanates, and civil war might well have occurred then, had he not died early.

Soon afterwards, Guyuk dispatched Eligidei to Iran at the head of reinforcements for the Mongol armies already stationing there, with instructions to assume supreme command in reducing the Muslim holds, beginning with Alamut.
Guyuk intended to follow after, but his death prevented the operations, which was charged some six years later, to his nephew and successor Mongke (1251-1259), who appointed his brother Halagu (1256-1265) to command an army to Iran, Iraq and Egypt according to the resolution of the Mongol National Assembly (quriltai) held in 649/1251.

City Diary investigation revealed that Wilbina had her eyes on taking charge of the old local government, Guyuk North, as against her appointment as caretaker committee chairperson of the new local government, because that is where funds will flow as the only recognised council by the federal constitution.
Unfortunately for her, the State House of Assembly had earlier decided that all the PDP chairmanship flag bearers must be assigned to take charge of the older and recognised councils in their areas, while the newly created councils should be handled by any other appointee.
The embattled appointee is said to have been tricked into believing that government will suspend the swearing-in exercise of the council leaders of both Guyuk North and Guyuk North at the swearing-in ceremony, after which she will be considered for her choice.

In factual history, Guyuk died after a two-year reign, but it is easy to devise a counterfactual in which he brought the Mongols to the Christian faith and ensured that Islam, rather than Nestorianism, would dwindle to near extinction.
