In spite of the establishment of Muslim rule in Delhi and UP (Uttar Pradesh) in the former kingdoms of Prithiviraj Chauhan and Jaichand Rathod, the Muslim invaders could never overrun the entire country.
The Rajput dynasties like the Tomaras of Gwaliar and the Ranas of Mewad still continued to rule central India.
While the Tomaras of Gwaliar held back the Muslims from advancing into Malwa, the Ranas of Mewad held up the banner of Indian independence from Mewad in those trying times of Muslim aggression in India.

The chief guest was naturally the Scindia of Gwaliar.
Malvyaji outlined his dream of founding a Hindu University grounded on Indian values and tradition and made an impassioned appeal for donations from the wealthy assemblage.

Chandu Shah, who was instrumental in the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev, and apprehensive of Guruji's increasing influence upon the Emperor, cleverly contrived an astrologer, and made Jehangir to keep Guruji in an internment in the Fort of Gwaliar to enable Jehangir to eliminate his ailments.
Amicably and humbly the King led Guruji to the Gwaliar Fort where he stayed for a number of years.
Jehangir had already conceded to the piety and bravery of Guruji, which was exhibited during a joint hunting venture.

Khushhal Khan was born near Peshawar, the son of Shahbaz Khan, a chief of the Khattak tribe.
By appointment of the Moghul emperor, Shah Jehan, Khushhal succeeded his father in 1641, but Aurangzeb, Shah Jehan's successor, kept him a prisoner in the Gwaliar fortress in Delhi.
