Gwathmey Siegel's Instant Icons - The World and I Magazine
Gwathmey Siegel and Associates, in its decades of practice, has become more accustomed to critical acclaim and the approval of its colleagues than to the public and often bitter denunciations of its efforts that the Guggenheim project produced.
Gwathmey Siegel's concern with context is more recent that its interest in cool, sculptural form-form Gwathmey speaks of as being not accretive but reductive: "Elimination of, to arrive at, rather than addition of, to arrive at." Reduction, he suggests, makes a work involving.
Gwathmey and Siegel, while admitting an interest in relating to context, are quick to deny the philosophical bases of Postmodernism.

Gwathmey's apart ments, which were the height of fashion and innovation at the time of their design, now look rather dated - particularly those from the 1980s.
Gwathmey retained the space's original oval shape, with its 25-foot-high barrel-vaulted ceiling and steel trusses, once home to a running track, to create a soaring living space, while adding a master bedroom suite and a balcony library.
Gwathmey was chosen for the 1992 renovation of the Guggenheim Museum, because many of his clients' apartments are, in effect, art galleries.

Round & round we go: the Guggenheim reopens Commonweal - Find Articles
From the moment Gwathmey Siegel & Associates - the architects who designed the uptown museum's transformed interior and new annex - presented their plans to the public in 1985, critics started to mount the barricades of zoning laws and press campaigns.
Gwathmey Siegel's first idea for an addition - a cantilevered projection looming over the Fifth Avenue spiral - appeared to many outraged architectural mavens, preservationists, and neighborhood residents to turn Frank Lloyd Wright's uncanny structure into a "giant toilet bowl." The original conception was promptly revised.
Inside the ten-story annex, however, Gwathmey and Siegel have constructed seven much-needed floors of soaring galleries, adorned gratefully, it seems, with larger works such as those by the abstract expressionists that had never rested comfortably on Wright's sloping walls.
