This reflects a transformation in which an ethnic group begins referring to itself with a term which was originally considered an ethnic slur.
In Mandarin, guizi (鬼子, w:pinyin: guǐzi) is a similar term to gweilo.

Appropriately, when a child throws a tantrum, his mother may call him a "barbarian devil," the same name she uses to deride a foreigner.

Gweilo Diaries is what got me hooked on blogs in the first place, and I have sorely missed it.
Though Conrad and I disagreed politically on almost everything, he was always s decent sort to me and I had promised to go over to the Gweilo Diaries and publicly eat some Crow for him if Bush won the election.

Given the title, this is a book I had to read, though I have to admit I was expecting something a little different - maybe more like Liam Fitzpatrick's tales of 'Bottoms Up' perhaps.
Martin Booth wrote 'Gweilo' because (just over two years ago) he was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
I'm a gweilo living in Canada (my fiancee being Cantonese) and so it's really neat hearing your stories about life in Hong Kong.

IMO, Philipinos, Malaysians, and Indonesians are very distinct from the rest of asia, such as China, korea, and japan.
The reason I ask this question is because there is a resemblance between them.
In a pbs documentary I saw, some scientists took dna from several ethnic groups, especially tribal groups which haven't had much exposure to the rest of the world and traced the path of human beings from africa.
