To have Gwen's death on the conscience of Spider-Man is probably a lot for kids and casual fans to take, as Gwen Stacy is known primarily by comic book fans and that's about it.
But Gwen's death happened right in front of the reader, and it seems as though it is Spider-Man's fault that she died because he snagged her with his web and snapped her neck.
If the filmmakers had wanted to use the Gwen Stacy character, she should have been set up in the first movie and killed in the second, thus setting up Mary Jane for the remaining films.

I like Gwen's character in the comics, don't get me wrong, but if they were going to put her in Spider-man, they should have done so in the first installment.
She's in the Symbiote story arc, she crushes on Spider-man, and she'll add alot more color than Gwen at this point (well, not literally, but you know what I mean).
If they were going to use Gwen, then they should havr used her in the 1st movie, or not do the bridge seen.

She was a close friend of MJ's, and had a continually on-and-off romantic relationship with Peter which was consistantly hampered by the fact that he would stand her up to go fight villians (sound familiar?).
Gwen was enormously popular among fans, and her death sent shockwaves through the Marvel community.
Except in the comic book, when Spidey caught Gwen by the leg with his web the force of the sudden jerky stop snapped her neck.* It was devestating.
