The Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT), an independent charity, is also part of the partnership and acts as an umbrella group for the local Wildlife Trusts, as well as operating a separate grants unit which administers a number of funds.
The first independent Trust was formed in Norfolk in 1926 as the Norfolk Naturalists Trust, and it was not until the 1940s and 1950s that a number of new Naturalists' Trusts were formed in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, West Wales, Leicestershire and Cambridgeshire.

The fire took hold during the egg-hatching season and Gwent Wildlife Trust fears that 15 of the estimated 20 breeding pairs could have been lost, and much of the grouses' moorland habitat has also been destroyed.
Julian Branscombe, chief executive of Gwent Wildlife Trust, said: "It could be years before the habitat recovers, it's quite catastrophic because of the importance of the site and the longevity of the impact.
Wildlife and plantlife ranging from skylarks, adders and crowberries have also suffered, as well as insects.

Wildlife trusts in Wales have claimed that two endangered species of fish could be lost forever from the UK if plans for a barrage in the Severn Estuary, near Burnham-On-Sea, get the go-ahead.
The six trusts, along with other conservation organisations, are opposing plans to build a 10-mile barrage between Brean Down, near Burnham, and Lavernock Point in Wales.
The Wildlife Trusts are concerned that the plan could mean the loss of two rare fish - the allis shad and the twaite shad (pictured).

The trust hopes to record the whereabouts of the trees to protect them from being destroyed in future.

Three of the largest and oldest trees discovered so far are a yew at Mamhilad, near Pontypool, with a girth of 11.65m, an oak at Llantilio Crossenny, in Monmouthshire, with a girth of 10m and an oak at Wonastow, near Monmouth, with a girth of 10.65m.

Friends of the Earth Cymru: Press Releases: 2004: Environment Groups Unite Against Levels M-Way

Friends of the Earth Cymru, Gwent Wildlife Trust, RSPB Cymru, Gwent Ornithological Society and the Newport and Valleys branch of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales (CPRW) have met to discuss their opposition to the scheme and examine alternatives.
There is no way this road proposal can be described as sustainable - it will exacerbate climate change via emissions from increased car journeys, cut through protected wildlife sites, open the door to more development on green field land, and it could very well act as an economic drain on the wider area.
