Gwich'in means 'people of the caribou," an apt name for a cultural group that largely relies on this mammal for a major part of its economic sustenance.

The fate of the Nakotcho Gwich'in is the subject of some speculation on the part of ethnohistorian Shepard Krech who has proposed that severe changes were brought about by the introduction of diseases by the fur traders (and perhaps even the missionaries).
Although the Gwich'in were active in the fur trade throughout the XIXth century, they remained on the land, shifting territories in response to the abundance of fur bearers and food animals.

The Gwich'in Steering Committee was formed in 1988 in response to increasing threats to open the coastal plain (also known as 1002 area) of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to leasing for oil.

Until the 1950s, the Neets'aii Gwichin ("residents of the north side") lived a highly nomadic life.
Reverend Albert Tritt, a Neets'aii Gwich'in born in 1880, wrote that his people led a nomadic life, traveling to the Arctic coast, Rampart, Old Crow, the Coleen River and Fort Yukon in the 1880s and 1890s.
With the advent of firearms in the early 1900s, family groups began to gather more permanently at several locations; there was no longer a need to disperse into small groups to hunt caribou.

The tribe I mentioned as opposing drilling was the Gwichin.
As you know, the porcupines move in a giant half circle through Gwichin Territory to their calving grounds on the North Slope.
The porcupine herds have been decreasing in number for some years - without the help of Man - unless the Gwichin hunters have been doing some extra killing, which is doubtful.

The truth regarding the Gwich’ins opposition to drilling ANWR has nothing to do with the sacred Porcupine Caribou herds, which have steadily increased since the Prudhoe Bay drilling began.
The Gwich'ins authorized drilling on their own lands but unfortunately for them, no oil was found.
More to the point, the Gwich'ins are jealously angry that the Inupiats will profit more if ANWR is drilled because it would be on Inupiat soil.
