Instead, the highway can be severed periodically during flooding of the Gwydir and Mehi Rivers (the highway is actually on an island in the middle of these two rivers at this location).

GRAFTON, an 83-kilometre drive along the Pacific Highway from Coffs Harbour, is a peaceful district capital on a bend of the wide Clarence River, which almost encircles the city and occasionally floods it.

The NRMA report identified the Inverell section of the Gwydir Highway as one of the worst with 15 per cent of all traffic accidents occurring on the Gwydir between 1995 and 2004 occurring in this area.
The report found that only 2 per cent of the Gwydir Highway was safe for overtaking on and that over half of the highways shoulders were in need of repair as they showed major rutting and broken edges.
Hopefully with funding for the highways in our region coming from all levels of government there will be changes in the state of our highways in time to come however in the words of Mr Torbay "we still have a lot of work to do to".

Friday, 30 November 2007: Horses are now able to move freely between Moree and the Coast via the Gwydir Highway following an extension to the NSW Equine Influenza Protection plan's green zone.
The green zone boundary has been adjusted to take in a small section of the Gwydir Highway near Moree that remained in the amber zone when a further 10 million hectares moved from high risk (amber) to lower risk (green) this week.
“It makes sense to include the Gwydir Highway east in the green zone because it opens up an important transport route to horse owners who have waited a long time to participate in events or move their horse to another location.”

After lunch it was west over the Gibraltar Ranges on the Gwydir Highway which is a mix of fast sweepers a tight climb up the range and fast sweepers again into Glenn Innes.
The Monaro Valley highway, at least as far as Rockton, is another fabulous fun factor road with sweeper after sweeper, excellent road surface and gorgeous scenery.

SIX-HUNDRED and forty sheep were seriously injured and had to be put down after a B-double stock transporter lost control on the Gwydir Highway yesterday.

Tenders have been called for the $7.5 million upgrade of the Gwydir Highway west of Inverell at Lamonts Lane, Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay announced today.
The reconstruction of the 7.5 kilometre stretch of road is being funded through the increased toll on the Sydney Harbour Bridge introduced in 2002.
