The edge of the crater at an early period is apparently traced at Cole's Rock, where massive perpendicular faces of basalt occur, showing little sign of inclination or stratification, excepting at one point where a dip of twenty degrees towards the north is observable.
The inside of the crater is thickly peopled, and the civilizing influence of man's presence, exhibited in houses, vineyards, fruit gardens, and cultivated plots scattered all around its sides, tends to add to the peaceful, quiet aspect now worn by this once seething, fiery cauldron.
As the centre of the crater near Sandy Bay Beach is approached, these dikes increase in number, sometimes lying closely side by side, even also crossing each other at right angles, and varying in composition just as much as in their outward form and colour.

This formation, which is north of the crater Schroeter, has often been examined by disagreeing astronomers: for a sketch of it, in which a central line and radiating lines are shown, see the English Mechanic, 18-638.
The lunar craters are not in all instances the simple cirques that they are commonly supposed to be.
It seems to me that this opinion arose from a feeling that there should be something of an opinion: the idea that the lights might have been signals was not expressed by any of these astronomers [137/138] that I know of.

Astronet > A Quadrant of Elger
Probably for most early maps the answer is no, and some more recent ones are so cluttered that they are of little practical value.
Previously, I recommended Goodacre's clean simple maps, and now I feature the classic quadrant maps by Thomas Gwyn Elger, who was appointed the first director of the British Astronomical Association Lunar Section in 1890.
Although they lack lettered crater designations, the schematic crater outlines of these quadrant maps make them easy to use - printing the four maps on stiff paper, even today, 109 years after their introduction, would provide a useful guide for use at the telescope.

Charles Wood in an article for Sky and Telescope concurs with Thomas Gwyn Elger who in his 1895 classic, The Moon, referred to Tycho as "the Metropolitan crater on the Moon." Tycho is the most conspicuous crater visible near full Moon, shining brilliantly, surrounded by a dark ring, and radiating great long rays.
Away from the glare of a full Moon, Tycho can be seen as the prototype of the large complex impact crater with terraced walls, flat floor, and conspicuous central peaks.
As far as is known, Tycho is the youngest large crater on the Earth-facing side of the Moon.
