  :::: Welcome To Jongno-Gu :::
However, on 1760 (the 36th year of the King Yeongjo), as the name of Gyeongdeokgung was the homophone with Gyeongdeok, the epithet of the King Wonjong, the name of Gyeongdeokgung was changed to Gyeonghuigung.
Most of Gyeonghuigung were burnt down in 1829 (the 29th year of the King Sunjo), but restored in 1831 (the 31st year of the King Sunjo), and the restoration work was carried out during the 10th (1859) and the 11th year of the King Cheoljong.
Heonghwamun was moved to the Bukmun in 1932 and used as the main gate of Shilla Hotel until recently and moved to Gyeonghuigung.

 :::: Welcome To Jongno-Gu :::
Gyeongdeokgung was later on called Gyeonghuigung by the order of the King Yongjo, and Changdeokgung, the palace in the east, was renamed the palace in the west.
Gyeonghuigung was a palace using the topography of sloped hill, and its beauty was prominently outstanding in terms of artistic and architectural sense.
The scale of Gyeonghuigung was so large that the King Gojong made an overpass connecting Gyeonghuigung to Deoksugung in 1905.

Gyeonghuigung Palace was built in 1616 by Gwanghaegun (1608-1623) on the site of King Taejo's private residence.
It was formerly called Gyeongdokgung but was renamed Gyeonghuigung in 1760 during the reign of King Yeongjo.
Gyeonghuigung was originally composed of many buildings including Sungjeongjeon and Jipkyeongdang, as well as Hunghwamun Gate, but in 1829 (the 29th year of King Sunjo's reign) most of them were destroyed by a fire.

Gyeonghuigung Palace was completed after an extended period of construction, during the 12th year of the reign of Gwanghaegun (1620).
After the Japanese invasion in 1592, Changdeokgung Place was used as the residence of the king, while Gyeonghuigung Palace was used as a detached palace.
During its heyday, Gyeonghuigung comprised more than 100 halls, most of which were burnt down in two separate conflagrations, one during the 29th year of the reign of King Sunjo (1829) and the other during the 20th year of the reign of King Gojong.

Built in 1616 as a detached palace, Gyeonghuigung (The Palace of Shining Bliss)has had rather a traumatic history.
Burnt down in 1829, the palace was restored a mere two years later only to suffer later humiliation at the hands of the Japanese, who tore down the buildings and built Gyeongseong Junior High School on the site.
However, if you value a little quiet while you wander through an historic place that was in use for over 290 years, then I'd highly recommend a trip to one of Seoul's unknown gems.

King Gojong and his son (Sunjong, the last king of the Joseon era) took refuge in 1896 here after Gojong's queen, Myeongseonghwanghu, was murdered by the Japanese.
Gyeonghuigung Palace is one of 5 Joseon era palaces located in Seoul, and it is said that originally the palace complex covered much ground and was connected to Deoksugung Palace through a raised bridge.

The Gyeonghuigung palace with the beautiful Heunghwamun gate is just behind the museum, and don’t miss the restored palace bridge that is in front of the museum at the entrance to the main road.
Each of the palaces has its merits and visiting any one of them (except Gyeonghuigung, of which virtually nothing is left) will give a good feel for the architecture and royal life of the Joseon dynasty.
For arguably the best single piece of Joseon architecture, go to Gyeonghuigung to see the Heunghwamun, although it is now positioned totally out of context and the presence of nearby skyscrapers has almost destroyed the impact: surely it would be better to place it back in line further up the slope?
