Gyeongsang - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gyeongsang (Gyeongsang-do) was one of the eight provinces of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty.
In 1895, Gyeongsang Province was replaced by the Districts of Andong (Andong-bu; 안동부; 安東府) in the north, Daegu (Daegu-bu; 대구부; 大邱) in the centre, Jinju (Jinju-bu; 진주부; 晉州府) in the southwest, and Dongnae (Dongnae-bu; 동래부; 東萊府; modern-day Busan) in the southeast.
Gyeongsang Province was bounded on the west by Jeolla and Chungcheong Provinces, on the north by Gangwon Province, on the south by Korea Strait, and on the east by the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

In the Central region are the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong and Gangwon provinces; in the South, Gyeongsang, Jeolla and Jeju provinces; and in the North, Pyeongan, Hamgyeong and Hwanghae provinces.
The fact that Gyeongsang Province also has another name, "Yeongnam," which literally means "south of the mountain pass," attests to the key role that the mountains have historically played in fostering regional differences between the Korean people.
Gyeongsang Province has one of the largest industrial agglomerations, second only to the capital area, due mainly to the heavy investments in the region by the South Korean government since the 1960s.

The Gangwon dialect has become the favorite slang of comedians, who often use it on TV shows these days, and is contributing greatly to raising the popularity of soap operas which have its main characters use it.
As the popularity of the Gangwon dialect has risen, local broadcasters in the Gangwon Province have begun making programs solely in their local dialect, which until recently was considered unacceptable on television.
The recent Gangwon dialect boom is noteworthy in that it draws no distinctions between the mainstream and the non-mainstream, unlike in the past, when those using provincial dialects were considered inferior to those who used standard language.

This paper examines, in addition to the dialects of the Gyeongsang-do and Hamgyeong-do, which are known as the areas of the multi-type accent, the accents of those dialects of the Gangwon-do, Jeolla-do, Chungcheong-do and Jeju-do, which have not been studied in depth.
A characteristic of this dialect is the co-existence of two types, namely a type where the position of the accent (accent kernel) is phonemic, on the one hand, and a type where each accent unit (phrase) has one of the fixed intonation patterns, on the other.
The present paper attempts to clarify the prosody of the Kwangju dialect, which is in the process of decay similar to the Chonju dialect the present writer has been studying.
