Leadbeater's Possum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leadbeater's Possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) is an endangered possum restricted to small pockets of remaining old growth Mountain Ash forests in the cool, misty highlands of Victoria, Australia.
Leadbeater's Possums can be moderately common within the very small areas they inhabit: their requirement for year-round food supplies and tree-holes to take refuge in during the day restricts them to mixed-age wet sclerophyll forest with a dense mid-story of Acacia.
The possum was not discovered until 1867, and was known only through five specimens; the last one was collected in 1909, and from that time on the fear that it might be extinct gradually grew into near-certainty.

The standard and C-banded (four species) karyotypes of six species of the family Petauridae (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri, Petaurus australis, P. breviceps, P. norfolcensis, Dactylopsila trivirgata and Dactylonax palpator) are described.
Gymnobelideus and Petaurus have diploid chromosome number of 22.
All three species of Petaurus have a similar karyotype, consisting of biarmed autosomes and very small sex chromosomes, which differs from Gymnobelideus by a minimum of one chromosomal rearrangement of each autosome.

As far as is known the Leadbeater's Possum, Gymnobelideus leadbeateri, McCoy, lives only in Victoria over an area of some 400 square miles extending from Marysville to Tanjil Bren.
Even in the days of Victoria's early naturalists this possum was regarded as one of the greatest rarities of our fauna, and only five specimens were collected up until 1909.
The general colour of body and tail is grey with beautiful dark markings around the eyes, ears and head.

 Spatially-correlated extinction
Previous models of metapopulation viability have either ignored correlated extinction of patches, or have included uniform correlations, with the correlation between nearby patches being the same as the correlation between distant patches (Lindenmayer et al.
The importance of considering spatially-correlated extinction in metapopulation viability analyses was assessed using a model of the population dynamics of Leadbeater's possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri), an endangered species inhabiting montane forests in south-eastern Australia.
The model of Leadbeater's possum metapopulation dynamics was based on that of Lindenmayer & Possingham (1995).

In 1995 a fauna survey was conducted in the Macedon region as part of an Environmental Effects Statement, and a tuft of hair was collected from the ground layer in Swamp Gum Eucalyptus ovata riparian woodland.
This result was of particular importance because the location where the hair was found is over 85 km west of the species’ known range.

Climate Action Network Australia : Australian animals
Animals that have been reduced to small populations and have a small genetic base (such as the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Perameles gunnii) are at risk because they may not be as robust in dealing with changes.
Species that have very specific and narrow habitat requirements (such as the Lemuroid Possum Hemibelideus lemuroides in Queensland and the Leadbeater’s Possum Gymnobelideus leadbeateri in Victoria) are at risk because they are less able to adapt.
These species may be very dependent on certain forest types and specific plants, which could also be negatively affected by climate change.

A major task during the Earthwatch camps has been to monitor populations of the endangered Leadbeater's Possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) in the montane ash forests of the Central Highlands of Victoria, south-eastern Australia.
The dynamics of populations of other species of arboreal marsupials (possums and gliders) also have been monitored: the Greater Glider, Mountain Brushtail Possum, Sugar Glider, and Yellow-bellied Glider.
