Soc., 11: 19-76, suggested that the Gymnophiona could be the sister-taxon of the Caudata + Anura, but noted that the evidence was equivocal.
Evans and Sigogneau-Russell, 2001, Palaeontology, 44: 259-273, discussed the fossil evidence for the origin of the group and their relationships, and suggested that Gymnophiona be used for the fossil antecedents as well as the crown-group (living taxa) and that Apoda be restricted to use for the living crown-group.
The nomenclature of this group name is discussed by Dubois, 1984, Alytes, 3: 111-116.
