The gymnure's body plan is believed to resemble that of the earliest mammals, with a large toothy head about 1/3rd the length of the total body, a naked furless tail for balance and thermoregulatory purposes, and a plantigrade stance.
The gymnure commonly called the Greater Moonrat is generally agreed upon as as the largest living insectivore on earth, measuring up to 65 cm (26 inches) long and weigh as much as 2 kg (4.4 lb).
The gymnure has a very strong scent, typically described as a rancid garlic or onion smell, which is produced by its territory marking scent glands.

 Endangered Animals in Asia
They have home ranges that are approximately 40 meters in diameter, and they forage at infrequent times throughout the day and night, finding their food by rummaging through the leaf litter.
Gymnures are relatively solitary creatures, but are sometimes found in very small groups of two or three animals.
Dwarf gymnures were first discovered in 1918, but they were not considered a valid species until they were fully studied in 1994.

 Dwarf Gymnure
Gymnures are cousins of the hedgehog, sometimes called furred hedgehogs, and are insectivores.
They do intermix with the Lesser Gymnure, however, in the lower parts of the moss forest that they live in, and their appearance is very similar to the Lesser Gymnure.
Lesser Gymnures use regularly-traveled paths on their hunts for food, and they usually build themselves a nest on the forest floor in a pile of leaves or under a rock.

This rearrangement of the ingroup is characteristic of the classical long-branch attraction reported in Hendy and Penny (1989) where the outgroup in the five-taxon equal-rate example led to a rearrangement within the ingroup tree.

While in the field, the mammalogists documented 25 different species of poorly known small mammals, including three types of bats that likely represent new records for southwest China.
They also trapped an intriguing insectivore called a gymnure, which is distantly related to hedgehogs.
Scientists have yet to determine the gymnure's place on the evolutionary tree, so the team took tissue samples that can be used to conduct DNA analysis.
