In contrast to gynocentric feminism, the basic assumption of androgynist feminism is that the social role differences between the sexes have little or no basis in biological differences;(18) they are social constructions which can be changed by concerted effort.

Basically, I have shown that there are two kinds of gynocentrism: feminism (with all its leftist connotations) and the more mainstream quasi-traditionalism (the New Chivalry).
Both kinds of gynocentrism are not mutually exclusive; rather, they form a continuum on which individuals and groups may be widely distributed.

One, exemplified by Catharine MacKinnon’s account of the social construction of sexuality, "stress[es] the depths of women’s oppression." The second, expressed in selections from Carol Gilligan and Nancy Chodorow, gives a more positive spin on the norms of femininity, or at least describes them in terms more neutral than MacKinnon’s account.
A third expression of gynocentrism is represented by standpoint epistemology.
The fourth section of The Second Wave concerns differences among women and introduces the problematizing of the concept of woman, a theme which extends through the fifth and last section of the text, which centers on the problem of essentialism.

We will begin by considering whether there is a tenable distinction between sex and gender, what it means to say that a category is socially constructed, and how social constructions can be oppressive.
We will then take up representative samples of three feminist theoretical approaches (the Humanist approach, the Gynocentric approach, and the Dominance approach), together with sample political applications of them.
The latter part of the course develops a critique of attempts to provide a single systematic feminist framework, drawing on a greater recognition of women's diversity; this critique will lead us to rethink the project of feminist theory and to consider what new paths feminist theorizing might hope to take.
