Takamatu's grandfather, Toda Shinryuken Masamitsu, was the 24th Soke of Shinden Fudo Ryu and a master of Bikenshin Ryu as well as a sword instructor to the Tokugawa Shogunate.
Gyokushin Ryu is very similar to Gyokko Ryu and it is thought that its founder, Sasaki Goeman Teruyoshi, was from the Gyokko Ryu.

This ryu is known as the "bodyguard school", and was founded by Takagi Oriuemon Shigenobu around 1650.
The third of the ninja ryus, it uses similar taijutsu as Togakure Ryu, and is also known for double blocks and strikes This ryu originated with Heinaizaemon Ienaga Iga in the mid 1500.
Not much is known of this ryu except that it is an Iga ninja school and concentrated more on the espionage side of ninjutsu, rather than the fighting side.

Gyokko Ryu has the style of Koshijutsu (Attacking soft tissue)but was known as "Hichojutsu" (flying bird method) prior to it becoming "koshijutsu".
Gyokko ryu has a strong influence in the Takamatsu Den because it is where allot of our basics come from as well as most of the techniques from the Kihon Happo.
Gyokko Ryu is also very specific with kyusho and different fists (fudo ken, shito/boshi ken etc.)which are used on kyusho, hence Koshijutsu.

Gyokushin Ryu is very similar to Gyokko Ryu and it is thought that its founder, Sasaki Goerman Teruyoshi, was from the Gyokko Ryu.
Kumogakure Ryu was possibly developed in the 1600's by the Toda family as a school of thought.

Hakuun ryu was initiated by Garyu doji and later featured the flexible usage of four demons: shadow demon, fire demon, earth demon and wind demon.
The Takagi Yoshin Ryu uses many techniques similar to Judo or Aikido, but goes further in that when the techniques are applied, it is made difficult for the opponent to escape by rolling or breakfalling.

 Question about Gyokko Ryu and video/DVD - Ninjutsu Study Forum
Shihan Bud Malmstrom's Gyokko Ryu CD-ROM does contain all of the wazas but, they are performed slightly differently than what is shown in Soke's video and as they are described in the Nidan Manual.
Bud malmstroms video and vcd/pc cd on gyokko ryu is good for the katas of gyokko ryu, I also like manaka unsui's jinenkan video sets on gyokko ryu, as well as the other ryu-ha and weapons that he puts out as well, expensive but really good.
The reason I believe this is that Soke retains the Densho Scrolls for Gyokko Ryu Koshijutsu, making him the 28th Soke of the style and I'm pretty sure he will have added to these techniques over the years.

Togakure Ryu never had a official founding as some martial arts, just Daisuke and Shima who was also alive at the same time and worked with Daisuke.
It was interesting to note that the 11, 12 and 13th Soke of the Ryu are named after the main town of Iga, Ueno.
                 32nd Soke of Togakure Ryu, Shinryuken Masamitsu Toda was also a master in the Bikenshin Ryu and was the sword instructor for the Tokugawa Shogunate in the mid 19th century.

Legend tells of its founder Yo Gyokko using this koshijutsu (the attacking of nerve centres with pinching or striking finger drives) system to defeat several tens of warrior monks lead by an old man of strange appearance who wanted Yo dead because of his reputation in defeating challengers.
All of these methods are said to have been developed in the mountains of Kumano by shugenja warrior monks who first of all developed the use of their shakujo ringed staff to defend themselves.

The literal translation of Bujinkan is "Hall of the Divine Warrior."
