Lukacs interprets her position to mean that "swings to the Right should be and are dealt with - more or less spontaneously - by the 'organic' development of the workers' movement".
Lukacs summarizes the difference between their positions of the struggle against opportunism as "whether or not the campaign against opportunism should be conduced as an intellectual struggle within the revolutionary Party of the proletariat or whether it was to be resolved on the level of organization".
Lukacs' reinterpretation of Lenin must be understood in the context of attempts in the West to break with the orthodox Marxism in which Lenin still believed, and to devise a version of Leninism compatible with the emphasis of revolutionary subjectivity that had emerged as one of the chief theoretical characteristics of the post-war offensive.

Lukacs' programme was a 'destruction of ontology' - that is a dismantling of the instrumental reasoning that had separated us from our primordial being.
In Heidegger's estimation Germany was caught between the pincers of bolshevism in the East and Yankee capitalism in the West, which, despite their differences were 'metaphysically' the same, operating according to the same indifference.
But departing from Lukacs, the School gradually dispensed with the role of the working class in revolutionary theory, bringing its newly minted 'critical theory' yet closer to Heidegger's romantic rejection of the modern world.

Irrationalism: Lukacs and the Marxist View of Reason (Tom Rockmore)
This work is an illuminating exposition of the sources and legacy of G. Lukacs whose History and Class Consciousness appeared like a kind of red alert on the reds at the time of the Bolshevik revolution.
One need not be a Marxist to profit from seeing a truly slick mind at work, and from Rockmore's history of the ideas coursing through Lukacs brain as he produced this almost enigmatic work that almost cunningly blends Neo-Kantianism, Hegelianism, and a non-Engelsian historical materialism.
What I found interesting was the connection with the Neo-Kantians (and the influence of figures such as Lask and Rikert on Lukacs, this being invisible behind his reputation for "Hegelian Marxism".

During the debate of the so-called Blum theses in Moscow (this was the title Gyorgy Lukacs used for his presentation of ideological matters pertaining to the movement, which was rejected) the Party issued its slogan regarding the "democratic revision of Trianon."
The term "democratic" is quite important here because, in contrast to the stand taken in the twenties, this implied that the concept of revision within the framework of the counter-revolutionary Horthy regime was unacceptable.

To look at the hungarian party, for example, the orthodox and obedient Bela Kun perished, whereas his rival Gyorgy Lukacs survived.* The heretical Sandor Varjas was arrested, but so was the orthodox Ladislaus Rudas, who was sending forth a constant stream of hard-hitting, hard-line polemics against all possible deviations.
A political autobiography covering the period to April 1941 in the Lukacs archives in Budapest, probably written on order of the NKVD as the basis for his interrogation made no mention of the struggle against fascism, which he had previously insisted to be central to his political commitment (New Lefi Review 91,1975).
Marxism knows that small villainies can be performed with impunity when great deeds are being achieved; the error of some comrades is to suppose that one can produce great results simply through the performance of small villainies.

Marxist Criticism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The basic assumption of Marxist criticism is that those who control a society's economy also control or largely influence its cultural and intellectual products.
Traditional Marxist critics such as Gyorgy Lukacs and Lucien Goldman, study the relationship between historical epochs and the rise and fall of certain literary forms -- for example, nineteenth-century Realism or seventeenth-century tragedy.
Contemporary Marxists see literature, as well as history, as something that must be constantly rewritten to serve current policy or needs.
