Gyps vulture - The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
Investigating causes of the collapse of vulture populations in India
Only vultures of the genus Gyps appear to be affected, and genus specificity is typical of some groups of diseases, particularly viral diseases.
Infectious disease is one of the few things that could explain the speed of the declines and the fact that they occurred nationwide, in both protected and unprotected areas and in both rural and urban areas.

The Hindu : Other States / Rajasthan News : Gyps vultures on the verge of extinction
The Gyps vultures are in danger of extinction.
The latest studies indicate that out of the three species of Gyps vultures--White-backed vulture, the Long-billed vulture and the Slender-billed vulture-- the White-backed are the ones facing the most serious threat to their survival.
The Slender-billed (Gyps tenuriostris)--until recently considered a sub-species of Long-billed vulture-- breeds in the Gangetic plain along the lower Himalayas from Kashmir through Nepal, Bengal, Assam and Bangladesh.

BioMed Central | Full text | Systematics within Gypsvultures: a clade at risk
Gyps species are unique among Old World vultures in that they feed exclusively as scavengers, whereas other vultures are also known to kill their prey on occasion or, rarely, to feed on fruits (i.e., Gypohierax angolensis; [2,3,21].
Many Gyps vulture populations have become increasingly dependent on domesticated animals, especially cattle, and this has contributed to their catastrophic decline in Pakistan and India, due to their secondary exposure to the veterinary pharmaceutical drug diclofenac (see [12,13,15,53]).
Gyps bengalensis was fairly recently described as the most abundant large bird of prey in the world [4], yet, in as little as ten years, this species has become exceedingly difficult to find in the wild (see [54] for current trends).

The core organisation for gyps africanus consists of 21 people this we believe to be practical and efficient.

Bookings for gyps africanus should be made as soon as possible as we believe there are other events on at the same time which may take the prime venues.

Slender-billed vulture - Gyps tenuirostris: More Information - ARKive
Having suffered an extremely rapid decline in numbers due to a previously unknown cause, the slender-billed vulture is in danger of imminent extinction without immediate conservation action.
By 2000, dead and dying Gyps vultures were being found so frequently in Nepal and India it was thought that they were suffering from an epidemic.
The unnaturally high death toll was thought to be caused by a fatal virus, but testing has revealed that vultures are suffering from kidney failure following the consumption of cattle that had previously been treated with the anti-inflammatory drug, diclofenac (2).

Oriental White-backed Vulture (Gyps benegalensis) and Long-billed Vulture (Gyps indicus)
The Oriental White-backed Vulture (Gyps benegalensis) was once described as the commonest species of vulture found in the Indian sub-continent (Gilbert et al 2002).
All parties agreed to a manifesto that suggests obtaining, holding and possibly breeding three Gyps species of vultures in captivity as a safety measure, until the threat of Diclofenac is removed from the environment.

 TIME.com: Sunshine for Gyps -- Mar. 31, 1947 -- Page 1
In December, when wintry winds whistle up the gorge at Harpers Ferry and the temperature nears zero, the bush-league horse-racing circuit shivers to a halt at Charles Town, W. Va. It is the end of the line for gyp (short for gypsy) horsemen and their broken-down nags.
Yet except for a few gyps who "hopped" their horses, the racing was about as honest as it is anywhere—and like the big tracks, under state supervision.
Some of the crooked gyps believed that an older method—benzedrine—worked too, and did not show up in a saliva test the first time it was given.
