 Romanian Gypsy Musicians
Gypsy musicians working as purveyors of traditional music in rural villages as well as larger towns had to know the various regional repertoire, to be always prepared to acquire new music, and to creatively adapt older music for new occasions.
The touchstone of Romanian traditional music is the cry of the gypsy on his violin, the dazzling virtuosity of the tambal (the chromatic, multi-stringed hammered dulcimer), and the lament of the gypsy singer, improvising vivid reverie which never fails to touch the heart of any Romanian.
On the other hand, when engaged in music they are invested with special rights and authority (they are masters of ceremonies and their word is obeyed with no complaint or protest), and they suddenly become everybody's beloved friends, and are rewarded lavishly.

Django Reinhardt’s Gypsy Jazz music ::
Django was born in a caravan at a crossroads in the Belgian countryside on January 23, 1910.
This music seemed to impress Django because he took his guitar and accompanied my improvisation.” Together, they toyed with Stéphane’s melody, trading choruses, improvising over the theme, throwing in licks they had picked up listening to 78s, copping the stylings of their American to transport themselves far from the stilted elegance of the Claridge.
Manouche and Gitans proudly played Django’s music and pronounced it mare gilia—“our music.” His legacy had been on the verge of being lost; now suddenly, it was positioned to become a mainstay of their cultural heritage.

The mournful polyphony exploded finally into infectious dance rhythms accompanied by guitars, violins, mouth music, the sharp tap of tin spoons, young men's muffled bootheels thudding on bare boards, and the cavernous enclosed echo of milk-jug percussion.
Perhaps the divine feminine is understood by these Gypsies as being a little more incarnated, a little more accessible, than the remote concepts of divinity with which we gadje are comfortable.
As if deliberately to highlight the tensions between Swiss and Gypsy cultures, all of these incredible invocations from the Gypsies were schizophrenically interspersed with the hymns, readings, recitations, and the standing up and sitting down rituals of the regular church service.

The Hungarian instrumental dance music of the early 19th century--so-called "verbunkos" music--along with Hungarian popular songs ("magyar nóta" in Hungarian) and the csárdás, are referred to even by Hungarians themselves using one word, cigányzene (Gypsy music), if a Gypsy band happens to be playing them.
To be able to assess properly the music played by them--particularly if one takes into account the role of rural Gypsy musicians too--it is essential to have a thorough understanding of the whole of the Hungarian musical tradition, both written and unwritten, since that is the context in which it emerged and developed.
Verbunkos music went out of fashion in the second half of the 19th century; at its demise sheet music was needed to revive the few tunes which are still played now and then by musicians today.
