Gyr Falcon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gyr Falcon (Falco rusticolus), also spelled Gyrfalcon, is a large bird of prey.
This is the largest falcon, at more than 60cm in length with a wingspan up to 130cm, similar to the Common Buzzard.
It is like a large Peregrine Falcon in general structure, but broader-winged and longer-tailed than the Peregrine.

 AlShindagah Online
The falcon, not realizing that a man had been left behind, would assume that the fluttering pigeon had been disturbed by the departing camel and would attack the bird as soon as the camel and its rider were some distance away.
Falcons do not like the wind ruffling their feathers, so whilst eating the bird would always face into the wind, turning its back on the buried bedu who was down-wind from the falcon.
The Gyr falcon originates from the far north of North America, and it is therefore not surprising that at first there were many problems with keeping and breeding these falcons in the Arabian deserts.

At twenty-six inches in length, with a wingspan of more than three feet, she was of a race of falcon that is the largest and swiftest on earth.
The pigeon was unaware of her presence, but soon it would be close enough that it would see her as she left the cliff and would then have time to veer away and drop for the sanctuary of the trees.
