		The Gulf of Alaska gyre corresponds to Area 16 of the fur seal pelagic survey (Table 19 of Perez and Bigg 1981) where, in the summer, the animals eat predominately squid (78%), salmon (11%), rockfish (8%), and pollock (3%).
		It was assumed that 40% of the male population spent up to one month in the gyre in the summer and another month feeding in the area in winter.
		Based on this, and on studies of killer whales from other areas, resident killer whales in the Gulf of Alaska gyre are assumed to eat primarily salmon (80%), as well as large (10%) and small pelagics (10%).

		Smaller gyres occur in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans centered at 50° North.
		A typical gyre displays four types of joined currents: two east-west aligned currents found respectively at the top and bottom ends of the gyre; and two boundary currents oriented north-south and flowing parallel to the continental margins.
		Note that the bottom west flowing current of the polar gyres is the topmost flowing current of the subtropical gyres.

		Along the subpolar gyre pathway the red to yellow transition indicates the cooling to Labrador Sea Water, which flows back to the subtropical gyre in the west as an intermediate depth current (yellow).
		The current, known as the sub polar gyre, has weakened in the past in connection with certain phases of a large-scale atmospheric pressure system known as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO).
		While previous studies have proposed winds resulting from the NAO have influenced the subpolar gyre's currents, this study found heat exchanges from the ocean to the atmosphere may be playing a bigger role in the weakening current.
