Gyro Gearloose - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gyro Gearloose is a fictional character, a chicken created by Carl Barks for the Walt Disney company who originally appeared in the comic books as a friend of Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck and anyone who is associated with them.
Gyro is often assisted by his Little Helper (or just "Helper"), who is a small robot with a light bulb for a head.
In some stories, Gyro's primary rival is Emil Eagle although he is also antagonized by the Beagle Boys and Magica De Spell.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Gyro Gearloose
Gyro was first seen in Walt Disney's Comics & Stories #140 (May, 1952), but only briefly — he was there to deliver a single gag, then get out of the way so Donald Duck and his nephews could get on with their story.
Gyro himself wasn't a Duck — in fact, his exact species was never specified, tho it's generally assumed (and confirmed by Barks in interviews) he's a chicken —; but that's the set of characters he's always been associated with.
Gyro was in #s 1047 (November 1959), 1095 (April 1960), 1184 (May 1961) and 1267 (December 1961).

Personally, I don't think Gyro was any more or less "devoted" to the duck family than any other character in the Barks universe.
I have in my collection every Barks story ever published, and Gyro, within the context of the duck stories and outside his own four-pagers in UNCLE SCOOGE, was used mainly as a plot device.
I think Gyro is a chicken, and the reason why he is friends with the ducks is because ducks and chickens make good friends.
