The Wolseley Gyrocar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Gyrocar had two wheels, placed in line, like a motorcycle, and was steadied by a gyroscopic device controlled by two pendulums.
In 1938, it was decided to dig up the Gyrocar, although this was complicated by the fact that a railway yard had been built on top of the site.
He wrote an article for "The Morris Owner" for the May 1939 issue, advocating gyrocars, in which he conceded that, at 2¾ tons, the original prototype was too heavy.

 Wolseley Register gyrocar
Inevitably, once the Gyrocar was built, it proved to be a rather ponderous machine according to contemporary accounts, but perhaps this is of little importance against the fact that the principle of a gyroscopically-balanced vehicle was proved workable.
The Gyrocar was driven by a Wolseley (approx.) 20hp engine mounted behind the front wheel and driving the rear wheel via an offset driveshaft.
For a number of years, even after the end of hostilities, the Gyrocar lay abandoned in the factory and eventually the Wolseley directors decided they needed to be rid of it.

 Halfbakery: gyroscope for motorcycle
The inability to lean whilst travelling around corners this would create would be lethal.
Yeah but the Wolsey gyrocar DID lean when cornering, it just happened to stand upright when it was stationary.
I can imagine this would appeal to fat American (or indeed any nationality) bikers so they don't have to put their feet down at junctions or traffic lights.

I was brought up short during fast action in Sinister Barrier by a policeman's apparently pointing to a nonexistent second police car; really, he is indicating authority by pointing to the police star on his own gyrocar's hood.
I also had to puzzle over previous formula, which should read precious formula — very precious indeed to the survival of humanity.

Single wheel Segway?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
I'm still having problems imagining lateral DS for a one-wheeler.
I can imagine flywheel/gyros (ala Gyrocar), or tilting the wheel and shifting the base (piezo gyros sending impulses to linear tilting servos), but it all seems rather complicated, especially in light of the elegant simplicity of the current models.
My guess is IF they or someone else markets a single wheel version, it will likely be undynamically stable relative to latitude, and rely on the rider's natural balancing abilities, possibly coupled with helper ground contact members when necessary.
