Although the gyrocopter appears to be designed like a helicopter, and also behaves like one in the film, they actually require a runway for takeoffs and landings - they cannot ascend / descend vertically.
A gyrocopter is basically just powered by your standard car engine, many of the Mad Max 2 era gyrocopters would have been using a VW engine or similar.
The primary gyrocopter, the one which actually flew, survived the film intact, and was sold at the post film auction, as happened with many of the vehicles and other items.

Autogyro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whereas a helicopter works by forcing the rotor blades through the air, pushing air downwards, the gyrocopter rotor blade generates lift in the same way as a glider's wing by changing the angle of the air as it moves upwards and backwards relative to the rotor blade.
Later autogyros, such as the Bensen B-8M gyrocopter, generally use a pusher configuration for simplicity and to increase visibility for the pilot.
The Bensen Gyrocopter was adapted directly from the Hafner Rotochute and Focke-Achgelis Fa 330A-1 "Bachstelze" autogiros of World War II.

Gyros, gyrocopters, or gyroplanes, are perhaps the most misunderstood aircraft.
When designed properly, and flown by a pilot with the proper training, they are VERY SAFE; yet over the years they have developed somewhat of a bad reputation, due to poor design by some kit manufacturers and builders, and people with little or no training trying to fly them.
The rotor blades on a gyrocopter are not connected to the engine, they use air moving upward through the blades to keep them spinning, or "autorotating".

In the 1950s Bensen Aircraft Corporation exploded upon the sport aviation scene with their ground-breaking "Gyrocopters" and "Gyrogliders." When the brilliant engineer behind this success, Dr. Igor Bensen, introduced the B-7 Gyroglider (1955), its unprecedented simplicity of design and ease of flight captured the public's imagination.
The gyroplane (or "gyrocopter" or simply "gyro") is essentially a helicopter-airplane hybrid, offering many of the benefits of both and several of its own.
Once control of the glider was mastered, the craft was convertible to the engine-powered gyrocopter.
