Beyond these regions, these rock units were either not deposited or were eroded away during the Late Pennsylvanian (Kasimovian-early-middle Gzhelian) and Early Permian (late Sakmarian) marine regressions (Leven and Taheri 2003).
The Gheselghaleh formation is 242 m thick and consists of bioclastic limestone, sandstone, and marl.
Upwards in the section, Gheselghaleh Formation is replaced by sandstone and limestone of the Dorud Formation (Asselian in age, although the basal most strata of Dorud Formation could be late Gzhelian).

The appearance of R. modificata falls at or near the base of the Gzhelian Stage in both the Sverdrup Basin and the Barents Sea.
Although smaller foraminiferal subdivisions within the Gzhelian Stage seem tenuous given the present limited information, we suggest that with further testing, occurrences of these taxa may provide a reliable means for distinguishing upper Gzhelian strata from underlying units.

The strata have been dated as Virgilian (upper Pennsylvanian: Gzhelian) based on ammonoid biostratigraphy, regionally correlated based on the marine assemblage, and globally correlated based on ammonoid, fusulinacean and conodont data.
These morphotaxa conform to trigonocarpalean ovules based on their three angled symmetry and the presence of a stalked nucellus attached to the integument only at the base.
Global correlation with the Gzhelian of the south Urals, Russia is supported by ammonoid, fusulinacean and conodont data (Boardman et al., 1994).

As part of an ongoing study of Late Paleozoic terrestrial plants preserved in marine environments, a number of specimens of permineralized ovules of medullosan seedferns have been discovered in the Virgilian (Gzhelian), Finis Shale near Jacksboro, Texas.
Age assessment of the strata is based on ammonoid biostratigraphy.
In addition, these specimens from strata dated by marine biostratigraphy, represent the youngest known occurrence of this genus and thereby extend the known biostratigraphic range of Pachytesta.

This depositional break encompassed Serpukhovian to Gzhelian time and was probably synchronized with the Namurian uplift that mainly influenced Australia and South America of Gondwana.
These three sequences were interrupted by two major regressive events: first, the Namurian Uplift ranging in age from Serpukhovian to Gzhelian, and second, the Post-Sakmarian Regression occurring probably at Artinskian time in the Baoshan block, although the precise time interval of the latter event is still unclear.
The Baoshan block is characterized by warm-water, highly diverse and abundant faunas during the Early Carboniferous, by cold-water and low diversity faunas during the Early Permian, and by possibly warm-water but low diversity faunas during the Middle Permian.

Calcisponges, echinoderms and bryozoans occur frequently, while remnants of molluscs, brachiopods and ostracods are scarce.

Dunn also documented a decrease in the relative abundance of palynomorphs across the conodont-defined Carboniferous-Permian boundary, with only two of the 22 palynomorph taxa identified as being exclusively Gzhelian (uppermost Carboniferous) and only one exclusively Asselian (lowermost Permian).
The two exclusively Gzhelian taxa occur 5.1 m (17 ft) and 7.1 m (23 ft) below the boundary and the one Asselian taxon occurs 7.4 m (24 ft) above the boundary (Dunn, 2001, fig.

Historically, the Gzhelian Stage of the Moscow Basin and Russian Platform and the regional Virgilian Stage of North America have been considered equivalent and characterized by the appearance of the Shumardites-Vidrioceras ammonoid genozone.
However, although the lower Gzhelian C3JZ Horizon in the Ural Mountains does not contain representatives of Vidrioceras Böse or Shumardites Smith, the fusulinaceans Rauserites rossicus Schellwien, R.
In conclusion, the use of the first appearance of Idiognathodus simulator to define the global Gzhelian Stage coincides with the appearance of Vidrioceras and Shumardites and provides continuity with historical usage of the Vidrioceras-Shumardites genozone as characterizing the Gzhelian Stage.

The tectonic evolution of the entire orogenic wedge may be related with continuous crustal shortening during sinistral oblique subduction and collision.
Following accretion of the nappe pile in an oblique plate convergence with an important sinistral strike-slip component, a deformational hiatus in the Carboniferous is recorded in the western foreland of the Southern Urals, where shallow marine carbonates of Tournasien to Gzhelian age were deposited.
The western foreland thrust and fold belt developed in Permian to Triassic times with a small amount of shortening ($\sim$17km) and results from the accretion of terranes in the poorly exposed eastern part of the Urals.

Subsequent ice melting culminated in the Kasimovian when calcic Vertisols once again developed during fourth-order low stands and dry subhumid climates.
Ice build-up during the Gzhelian led to sea-level fall and the development of fourth-order humid-climate paleosols.
These trends are best explained by a paleo-atmospheric climate model in which tropical southern Euramerica were relatively humid whenever high-pressure over ice sheets fixed the position of high-latitude polar fronts and the intertropical convergence zone near the equator.
