 ROBERT HORVITZ
Robert Horvitz discovered and characterized many genes that play highly specific roles during animal development and in animal behavior.
"Robert Horvitz, Professor of Biology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been relentless in his use of genetic tools to reveal and dissect mechanisms of human development and behavior.
Horvitz's molecular analyses of these genes revealed most of them to be strikingly similar to genes found in other organisms, including humans, and in many cases similar to genes that cause human disease.

Boston.com / News / Local / N.H. / Nobel laureate decries limits on stem cell research
"This is a topic of science and medicine, but it's a topic that's become embroiled in politics," H. Robert Horvitz, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology biologist, said Monday at an Elliot Hospital forum organized by Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign.
Horvitz also said researchers need access to diverse embryonic stem cell lines so they can develop treatments that are good genetic matches for patients of different races and ethnic backgrounds.
Horvitz, whose father died of Lou Gehrig's disease, said research and treatments derived from embryonic stem cells have the potential to help future sufferers of brain diseases, diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis and cancer.

 H. Robert Horvitz
Robert Horvitz is using genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, electrophyisology, laser microsurgery and pharmacology to study how genes control the development of the nervous system and how the nervous system controls behavior.
Robert Horvitz studies how genes control the development and functioning of the nervous system.
Horvitz has elucidated a molecular genetic pathway for programmed cell death (apoptosis), which is fundamental to nervous system development in all animals.

 CNN/TIME - America's Best
But the idea intrigued H. Robert Horvitz, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who thought he had the perfect lab specimen to test the hypothesis — a tiny worm called C. elegans whose entire being consists of fewer than 1,000 cells.
Horvitz believes there's a larger lesson here about the importance of basic research.
During a postdoctoral fellowship in Britain, Horvitz helped to trace the appearance and ultimate fate of every single one of those cells during the worm's development from fertilized egg to adult.
