H.264 is MPEG4 Part 10/AVC codec that provides high compression, high quality video, best suited for surveillance application.
There are multiple levels of micro-codes for TI H.264 chip sets, the more expensive ones deliver more options and quality, in some case, the lower cost ones are written for Chinese market, e.g.

In those two countries, the move to high definition TV is going much faster than in the rest of the world as their governments sped it up with some special laws as well as the odd bit of legislation.
Apparently H264 is very hard to decode and I wrote before that a CPU cannot do it.
We learned the other day that software support for H264 content is ready and ATI is working closely with companies such as Cyberlink to provide the player and the necessary part of driver.

H.264 provides additional flexibility for frames to point to more than multiple frames – which may be any combination of past and future frames.
H.264 performs intra prediction in the spatial domain (prior to the transform, and it is a key part of the approach.
H.264 employs the same general approach as MPEG 1 and 2 as well as the h.261 and h.263 standards, but adds many incremental improvements to obtain coding efficiency improvement of about a factor-of-3.

H.264 is a new video codec standard which can achieve high quality video in relatively low bitrates.
Nero Showtime and Apple Quicktime players support H264 too, but their support is not so great for all formats (they play better H264 content that was created using Nero Recode or Quicktime Pro) so I don't suggest using them for general H264 playback.
I was told by t-mobile support that any avi file with an h.264 codec would play, but converting an avi to an avi with h.264 codec still did not play.

People routinely use H.264 variants to encode/decode all sorts of signals already, but these tend to be at lower resolutions.
Microsoft specifies a "3GHz processor or equivalent" for playback of the WMV HD clips at 1080p (with 5.1 sound), so that may or may not be sufficient for true 1080p in that format then, if what you say applies to all of them.
For H.264 and 1080p, hardware acceleration (when at a reasonable price) certainly seems like an attractive option in general, judging by the evidence so far (although that doesn't mean that there aren't higher level configs able to do without).
