The Hindu : Traffic at HAL Airport will continue to be high
HAL had opposed the airport's closure, an issue that had kept the State Government on tenterhooks for long.
Though HAL relented on the airport closure issue and helped in resolving the contentious integrated airspace management issue, a technical aspect related to the closure has become the latest irritant for the much-delayed Devanahalli project.
The State Government has reportedly objected to the framing of a clause related to the closure of the HAL Airport for commercial operation in the draft Concession Agreement (CA), which was cleared by the Centre on January 20.

Private airlines still prefer HAL Airport-Bangalore-Cities-The Times of India
One of the hurdles to keeping HAL Airport open is the commitment given to Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) that no other international airport would be approved within a radius of 150 km of the new airport.
The suggestion is that HAL Airport could initially be one for regional flights, and later grow to accommodate more varied flights.
HAL, in the meantime, is getting many proposals for the airport.

Sights, sounds and smells from Bangalore: Keep HAL airport for short-haul flights
A majority of readers responding to a Deccan Herald debate on whether domestic flight operations at HAL airport should continue once the international airport is ready, sent in mails and e-mails expressing their support for the airport.
If the agreement with BIAL is implemented, the HAL airport has to be closed down and even the government’s plans to have an airport in Mysore cannot be fulfilled, as even Mysore falls within the stipulated 150-km limit.
The government must reconsider the operation of domestic flights from the HAL airport as we don’t see any logic in driving down to the new airport wasting two previous hours from the city centre to catch short-haul flights.

Military flights hit by commercial traffic at HAL airport
Official sources said with the airport currently operating more than double its capacity, the HAL authorities were finding it difficult to carry on their work, be it routine sorties or testing prototypes of transport, civilian and military aircraft, designed and developed by defence establishments.
The airport was built in the 1940s to supplement military operations of the allied forces during the World War-II.
On the recent letter dashed off by HAL Managing Director A K Saxena to various commercial flight operators urging them not to add any more flights as it would only further worsen the situation, the sources said it was only a wake-up call and the situation was definitely not out of control.
