  HJT-36 Intermediate Jet Trainer
HAL's main focus is presently on the single engine HJT-36, which will replace the 200-odd HJT-16s as the intermediate jet trainer.
As of 2003, around 150 aircraft were expected to be procured by the Indian Air Force to replace the ageing Kiran trainers, which had been in use with the IAF for nearly 30 years.
HAL had pegged the overall project cost at Rs.200 crores and expected the prototype to roll out 39 months after it gets the go-ahead.

Against all safety norms the ejection exercise was conducted inside the prototype hangar of HAL Bangalore Complex while the aircraft was on the ground during 28 January.
HAL would have wasted several manhours to repair the aircraft, besides incurred a delay towards the date of induction into squadron service.
The IJT is a twin seater aircraft, under development by the HAL’s Aircraft Research and Development Centre, with ejection seats for both cockpits and meant to replace the HAL made Kiran trainer aircraft in service with the IAF since 1975.

 Airbus, HAL may join hands to convert A-320s into freighters
Airbus and HAL have signed an MoU to study the feasibility of the project and a report on the subject will be ready by the end of the year.
The conversion of the A320s into freighters will involve hefty expenditure and it remains to be seen whether HAL manages to dig-up the resources to invest in the venture once the feasibility report is ready.
For HAL, the deal, if it materialises, could prove to be a leap into manufacture of civil aircraft.

Even though last deliveries continued till 1989, the HAL Kiran (Ray of Light) was first conceived and developed in the early 1960s to replace the IAF's sizeable fleet of license-built De Havilland Vampire two-seat AJTs.
The Kiran design began in 1961 at HAL's Bangalore facility under the leadership of Dr. V.
HAL built a batch of 24 pre-production Kiran Mk.1 with the first of these delivered to the IAF in 1968.

 IAF places order for 16 IJTs with HAL
HAL Chairman N R Mohanty disclosed to the media in Bangalore on Thursday that the IAF had placed an order for the supply of 16 IJTs to its fleet in the coming years, as an interim measure pending a government decision on acquiring the much-touted AJTs.
HAL has also signed a deal with the French aerospace company, Turbomeca, for jointly designing, developing and producing in India the Shakti engines for the twin-engined ALH.
HAL has bagged a $9 million order to undertake sub-assembling work for Su-30 aircraft from the Russian aerospace company Irkut Research and Production Corporation.

Current transition by student fighter pilots from the HAL Kiran basic trainer to two-seat MiG-21Us appears to have been a step too far, and to have contributed to the high accident rate of this widely-used IAF type.
Although engine selection remains to be finalized in the next few weeks, design of HAL's projected 9,920 pound HJT-36 has been frozen and construction started, for a first flight in April 2001.

The trainer consists only of the forward fuselage and it is currently not known as to what happened to the rest of the aircraft.
A much older warbird, that has been seen for quite a number of years is the 'Ejection Procedures Trainer' - another wingless fuselage of a Kiran I. This fuselage is slightly longer than U-752, but probably missing the entire engine bay and tail empennage.
