There are other disciplinary points of view that would place the focus of HCI differently than does computer science, just as the focus for a definition of the databases area would be different from a computer science vs. a business perspective.
HCI in the large is an interdisciplinary area.
Regardless of the definition chosen, HCI is clearly to be included as a part of computer science and is as much a part of computer science as it is a part of any other discipline.

 Guerrilla HCI
British studies [Bellotti 1988] indicate that many developers don't use usability engineering because HCI (human-computer interaction) methods are seen as too time consuming and expensive and because the techniques are often intimidating in their complexity.
Also, time itself is on the side of increasing the perceived need for HCI since the software market seems to be shifting away from the "features war" of earlier years [Telles 1990].
I used the term "guerrilla HCI" in the title of this chapter because I believe that simplified usability methods can be a way for a company to gradually build up its reliance on systematic usability methods, starting with the bare minimum and gradually progressing to a more refined lifecycle approach.

Top HCI Research Laboratories (Alertbox March 2002)
Dating back to Vannevar Bush's description of hypertext in 1945, Doug Engelbart's invention of the mouse in 1964, and many other early projects, HCI has a rich history of research that has defined the way we interact with technology today.
Unfortunately, HCI has rarely been the first priority of new research organizations, so by the time research managers recognize the need for it and build up a world-class HCI team, it's often too late.
Although HCI research can be conducted on a small budget, most of the best projects do require the lavish resources that leading corporate labs have historically provided.

A Brief History of Human Computer Interaction Technology
Even the spectacular growth of the World-Wide Web is a direct result of HCI research: applying hypertext technology to browsers allows one to traverse a link across the world with a click of the mouse.
Without this research, many of the advances in the field of HCI would probably not have taken place, and as a consequence, the user interfaces of commercial products would be far more difficult to use and learn than they are today.
Although there are a number of other surveys of HCI topics (see, for example [1] [10] [33] [38]), none cover as many aspects as this one, or try to be as comprehensive in finding the original influences.

HCI Bibliography is a free-access online bibliographic database on Human-Computer Interaction.
The basic goal of the Project is to put an electronic bibliography for most of HCI on the screens of all researchers, developers, educators and students in the field through anonymous ftp access, mail servers, and Macintosh and DOS floppy disks.
This new science had its origins in the late 1970s as computer scientists, linguists, logicians, philosophers, psychologists, and artificial intelligence researchers, seeking solutions to problems in their own disciplines, turned to one another for help.

What is HCI? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
A user interface, such as a GUI, is how a human interacts with a computer, and HCI goes beyond designing screens and menus that are easier to use and studies the reasoning behind building specific functionality into computers and the long-term effects that systems will have on humans.
As computers become more and pervasive in culture, designers are increasingly looking for ways to make interfacing with devices easier, safer and more efficient.
