The development of a high performance metal tape enables high density recording with a recording wavelength of 0.49um achieving a digital recording length of up to 40 minutes for the small-size cassette, and 124 minutes for the large-size cassette.
The HDCAM Video tapes all come equipped with advanced metal particle tape technology that provides >45db carrier-to-noise ratio and low headwear for superb digital performance.
HDCAM tape uses a special lubricant that protects the tape surface and maintains optimal contact with the VCR heads.

HDCAM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
HDCAM gear made up most of the equipment, and the camera operators took their gear into treacherous conditions of extreme temperature and harsh terrain.
Last year, HDCAM was put through another endurance test when it was launched aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia as part of a Space Act Agreement between NASA and Sony to research the benefits of using high definition technology in space.
To better understand the roles of each of these HDCAM formats, it is helpful to recall the historical development of the two picture rates, as well as their separate and profound influences on program origination.

Betacam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HDCAM, introduced in 1997, is a HD version of Digital Betacam, using an 8-bit DCT compressed 3:1:1 recording, in 1080i-compatible (1920x1080) resolution, and adding 24p and 23.976 PsF modes.
HDCAM SR, introduced in 2003, uses a higher particle density tape and is capable of recording in 10 bits 4:4:4 RGB with a bitrate of 440 Mbit/s.

HDCAM / HDCAM SR, introduced in 1997, is a HD version of Digital Betacam, using an 8-bit DCT compressed 3:1:1 recording, in 1080i-compatible downsampled resolution of 1440x1080, and adding 24p and 23.976 PsF modes.
Some HDCAM VTRs play back older Betacam variants, for example, the SRW-5500 from Sony, an HDCAM SR recorder, plays back Digital Betacam and records HDCAM and HDCAM SR tapes, and tape lengths are the same as for Digital Betacam, up to 40 minutes for S and 124 minutes for L tapes.

Kingsley's Blog: What is HDCAM SR?
HDCAM SR, introduced in 2003, uses a higher particle density tape and is capable of recording in 10 bits 4:4:4 RGB with a bitrate of 440 Mbit/s.
Some HDCAM SR VTRs (SR camcorders are not available) can also use a 2x mode with an even higher bitrate of 880 Mbit/s, allowing for a single 4:4:4 stream at a lower compression or two 4:2:2 video streams simultaniously.
HDCAM SR uses the new MPEG-4 Studio Profile for compression, and expands the number of audio channels up to 12.

Research by Surreal Road » Blog Archive » HDCAM SR & 4k Production
Basically, the HDCAM material is conformed and colour graded, as if it were the 4k material (t is possible that the feature is edited offline at uncompressed HD resolution, in which case it does not need to be conformed, just graded).
This means that the graded HDCAM material can be used for high-quality screening purposes (and by extension, as video masters, though the paper does not suggest this explicitly).
Effectively, the HDCAM SR material serves as a proxy for the 4k film scans until the end of the production, rather than the current trend, which is to use 2k data proxies for the 4k scans.

HDCAM SR is much closer to its baseband signal particularly with RGB video for which SR compresses at 2:1 using MPEG encoding.
However, HDCAM is an 8 bit format so if, for example, you originated on film (1080p you say?) you are loosing that subtlety in the gradations and in the quality of graphics.
HDCam is such a marginal HD format that you should try to minimize generations.

HDCAM is a highly compressed format, HDCAM SR is considered a mildly compressed format.
Where as HDCAM SR is a 10 bit full raster format, it captures the full 1920 x 1080 image.
I think Sony's biggest mistake was actually naming the format HDCAM SR, because it is really a completely different format and the fact that it has HDCAM in the name just creates more confusion and misconception then anything.

While it is certainly possible to have a Dolby E stream on a HDCAM SR tape, it seems like a waste of resources to me. One could easily deliver 5.1+2 and still have four (4) audio tracks available on a HDCAM SR tape.
I know of one network that is only working with HDCAM SR, and I reckon they are not using Dolby E. Their spec sheet says confidential, so I can't type who they are.

 Production Clips: Overcranking HDCAM 24p
It’s great to see the HDCAM 24p system selected for many television episodics, theatrical releases, commercials and music videos that would previously have been shot on 35mm film.
HDCAM 24p overcranking at 60i or 50i requires interlace-to-progressive (I/P) conversion, a process that’s well proven, if not necessarily transparent.
When director Robert Rodriguez chose HDCAM 24p to shoot Once Upon a Time in Mexico and chose Victory Studios to post the trailer, the concept of 24p overcranking faced a practical test.

DV - Columns - HD Numerology
HDCAM is a 1080-line format using 1/2-inch tape very similar to Digital Betacam cassettes.
To get that bitrate with that degree of compression, something has to give: HDCAM records 3:1:1, with 1,440 luma samples and 640 chroma samples per line, throwing away 25 percent of the horizontal resolution prior to compression.
The visible differences between either of them and full-resolution HD are minimal, and the reduced data rate prior to compression allows a lower compression ratio to be used, reducing compression artifacts.
