HDCD encoding places a control signal in the least significant bit of the 16-bit audio samples (in-band signaling), adding a significant 4-bit more to the musical signal.
HDCD Precision Filtering purportly reduces alias distortion and time smears, resulting in more natural, open and accurate sound reproduction.
HDCD technology was developed between 1986 and 1991 by Keith Johnson and Pflash Pflaumer of Pacific Microsonics Incorporated.

HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) is a digital encoding and decoding process for compact disc and DVD audio recording.
The HDCD process manages to encode 20 bits of audio information into a conventional CD 16-bit channel, yielding a greater dynamic range and a more true-to-life sound when decoded.
HDCD was developed by Keith Johnson and Pflash Pflaumer between 1986 and 1991, and made publicly available in 1995.

 Hydrogenaudio Forums -> Extract HDCD
Having read the technical infos about HDCD which are publicly available (the AES paper) I currently believe HDCD to be just a technology with quite low benefit compared to plain noise shaping.
The peak decompression mechanism which is part of an HDCD decoder is fairly simple, but it won't increase the signal to noise ratio because most of the signal (except the peaks) will get attenuated by 6 dB.
So, if you play a HDCD via a normal CDplayer, the 16th bits would be converted by normal DDA-converter to pure noise.

For HDCD CD releases, Peak Extend restorable soft limiting can increase resolution by allowing signal levels to be raised by up to 6 dB; Low Level Extend can improve resolution of low-level signals; and HDCD high-frequency dither improves resolution by 6 dB (one bit).

HDCD recordings are made from analog to digital conversions having more bits and faster sampling to provide a large amount of dynamic and resolution information.
When operating with the HDCD decoder it not only achieves dynamic and high power clarity advantages of balanced multi-bit conversion but also low level ambiance and lack of grainy sound, features of one bit conversion.
Digital filtering or interpolation provided by the HDCD decoder smoothes the audio signal as well as reduces non-harmonic supersonic sidebands to prevent high frequency interaction in other components of the audio chain.

 HTGuide Forum - HDCD on RSP-1068/RDV-1050 not working?
Since HDCD isn't a different frequency or sample rate than a regular CD, maybe since the decoder is in the DVD player as well, it pre-decodes the 'extra' stuff and just sends it out as a normal signal.
When I play an HDCD disc on my RDV 1060, and use the digital input on my RSP 1068 in 2ch mode, "HDCD" shows up on the RSP's display indicating that it is decoding the HDCD signal.
The chip set used in the RDV1050 is not able to detect HDCD, and therefore pass on the bit-stream to the processor.
