  Handheld Device Markup Language FAQ
HDML is designed to leverage the infrastructure and protocols of the World Wide Web while providing an efficient markup language for wireless and other handheld devices.
While the target design point for HDML was wireless devices with small displays and constrained resources, HDML will also be useful in other environments where visual context is limited and where there is a need for concise and explicit transactions.
While HDML can't provide (and isn't meant to provide) access to the body of content found on the web for the sight-impaired, it may provide an alternate mechanism for accessing some classes of important data.

HDML provides display and navigation models designed to provide intuitive data access using a modified transaction paradigm rather than the document-based paradigm of HTML.
HDML was designed because no other markup or scripting language was available which met the needs of handheld devices with limited resources -- memory, processing speed, and bandwidth.
HDML is currently in use by a number of service providers and device manufacturers.

HDML (Handheld Device Markup Language) (Linktionary term)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-14)
HDML was developed by Unwired Planet (now Phone.com) as a markup language for pocket-sized devices such as cellular phones and two-way pagers that conform to Internet standards and protocols, and that are constrained to a few lines of display, a limited keypad, and little memory.
Like HTML, HDML uses commands and statements that display information on a phone, provide input options for the user, and specify how the phone responds when the user presses keys.
An HDML drawback is that it is proprietary, although open for use.

 Intro to HDML
HDML is the so-called handheld device markup language that allows you to make your website portable: People can view it on their mobile phones, pagers, and other tiny devices.
Needless to say, the average person is not going to want to research her dissertation on Keatsean animal imagery on a 4-by-12-character screen as she walks to her car, so the language and browser specifications focus on small-scale transactions: stocks, sports scores — you know the type.
Because WML was developed after HDML, it's a bit more graceful and is supported by all new wireless phones.

HDML would use the model of the World Wide Web and its protocols but in a more efficient language, suited to the limited size, memory, and processing power of the wireless world.
HDML's author and biggest promoter, Unwired Planet, submitted the language to the World Wide Web Consortium in hopes of making it a standard.
HDML reappears in a new wireless markup language inside the WAP protocol, where it is accompanied by a script language, wireless telephony application interface, and various other languages and protocols for transactions, security, and messaging.

 WAP Application and Development
HDML is specifically written for the WAP interface, and cannot be viewed using the typical web browser.
This is somewhat of a drawback, since two separate pieces of code must be written if the developer is interested in producing the same content across both the typical web platform and to the WAP browser.
While this is still possible with HDML code, it is certainly not as obvious and workarounds must be introduced.

When the user chooses to call the number by, for example, clicking a call button on the page, the HDML card is read by the HDML micro-browser's interpreter 205 which embeds the applicative message(s) into a Get request and passes it to the communications handler 200 for further action.
Each message received by the communications handler needs to be transformed into an appropriate HDML deck to cause the appropriate events to occur in the micro-browser, for example display a prompt on screen and/or to play a sound file.
Once the HDML card is generated, the page generator 220 passes it inside an x-up-notify message to the communications handler 200 which writes the message to the micro-browser's cache 210 for subsequent display or action by the micro-browser.

We were able to bring both our language design expertise and our whole systems approach: At the onset of the project, we not only considered the properties of tiny LCD screens, we waded through thousands of pages of cellular phone standards to understand the whole system of data and phones.
The result was the Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML) definition, a complete first implementation and functioning web sites to demo it.
We helped their, now much larger, engineering team bring to light what was learned from the first system, and helped synthesize a broad array of feature requests into a coherent design for HDML 2.0 and later 3.0.
