HDRA will participate in the work carried out by participant 4 in examining the release of nitrogen from the addition of organic manures to soils in organic systems, and where appropriate the losses of N to the atmosphere from such applications.
HDRA will store this information, together with collected data, from all participants, on agronomic yields, market specifications, farmgate values and relevant CAP strategies for use in WP5 where the implications on farm income and food supply of different management strategies of N supply in conventional and organic rotations will be determined.
HDRA will be fully involved with the interpretation of the outputs from the model run in terms of identifying the most cost effective methods of reducing N pollution in organic rotations whilst maintaining maximum economic yield.

 Trees for deserts: Overseas Projects, Henry Doubleday Research Association, Annual Report 1990: Journey to Forever
The HDRA has planted some 20,000 test trees and seeds of selected species have been provided for practical programs which have planted millions of trees on the islands, including species which are succeeding in problem areas.
The HDRA is working with Durham University on projects to conserve and investigate woodlands in the Wahiba Sands Desert of Oman, where communities of Prosopis cineraria and Acacia tortilis trees survive with little or no rainfall.
In 1988 the HDRA began a collaborative laboratory and field research project with Shandong Teachers University in China on revegetation of an area of some 7,000 square kilometres in the Yellow River Delta, where the problem is not only desert conditions but saline soils.

The new test, HDRA (histoculture drug response assay), was used to optimize treatment for individual cancer patients.
The trials indicated that the use of HDRA can contribute to the cancer patients' response to treatment and their long-term survival.
HDRA works as follows: A small portion of the patient's tumor, taken during initial surgery or biopsy, is grown in a "test tube" at AntiCancer Inc. 's San Diego laboratory.

 SeedQuest - Central information website for the global seed industry
HDRA members involved in Supermarket Watch monitored the sourcing and monthly average prices of organic vegetables in supermarkets nationwide every month from April to December 2004.
In the first survey of this kind, HDRA was able to gain a rare insight into the purchasing habits of “committed” organic consumers.
HDRA Research Officer Natalie Geen said: “The key issues for committed organic consumers taking part in Supermarket Watch were the lack of local or UK organic vegetables available and their level of packaging.”

The association between HDRA assessment of chemoresponse and clinical outcome remained significant even after controlling for the effects of TNM stage and the presence of recrrent cancer at presentation by multivariative analysis.
Chemosensitivity determined by the HDRA seems to be a strong predictor of survival in patients with advanced HNSCC and should be considered further.

Alitex have been proud sponsors of the HDRA for 7 years and during that time have got to know Jackie and Alan well.
Their dedication and enthusiasm for HDRA for the last 30 years has seen it grow from a small charity in Essex, to the large, world renowned organization it is today - with three gardens - Ryton, Yalding in Kent and Audley End near Saffron Walden, Essex.

Because of the very different operational circumstances between recreational and commercial growing, gardening practices have to be expressed in a different way, but standards of organic practice are expected to be equally high.
HDRA state that their guidelines match European Union commercial organic standards in almost all cases.
Organic gardening could be expressed as simply as "no fertilisers, sprays or weed-killers" or it could be described as a way of life in partnership with the planet, it depends upon the person doing it.

 Permaculture Association (Britain) - Farm trials for organic plant varieties
Five groups of growers will have a chance to become directly involved in the variety-trialling process and gain first-hand experience of growing new varieties on their land.
HDRA, NIAB and the Soil Association will provide technical back-up to growers and groups, offering advice and support on how to set up and run the trials.
Dr Margi Lennartsson, HDRA's Director of Research and Development, says: "The aim is to create a programme in which growers, researchers and seed suppliers work actively together to provide information on the suitability of varieties for organic vegetable production."

Results were presented from a MAFF-funded study carried out by ADAS, EFRC and HDRA to examine concentrations of nutrients and heavy metals in cattle manures and slurries from organic farms.
Current research in the Soil Nutrient Dynamics Department at HDRA includes projects on manure use in organic agriculture, winter cover crops, use of green waste composts in agriculture and understanding soil fertility in organically farmed soils.
At HDRA, for example, measurements of microbial C and N and using BIOLOG plates were unable to show differences between soils receiving different compost treatments.

NIAB and HDRA have been testing varieties of field vegetables and potatoes for organic production and marketing through this DEFRA-funded programme since 1991.
They will be offered some training in variety assessment, and funding is also available for groups to act as an information hub and host visits to the trials.
Ultimately, the aim is to get many “copies” of the same trial grown out by different farmers, on different soil types, in different conditions and for different target markets, in order help both growers and researchers gather and share information about variety performance.

It came as a nasty surprise to her and HDRA staff to hear on BBC local radio on 4 April this year that GM maize trials were to begin at a farm just 2.7km from organic sweetcorn sites at Ryton Organic Gardens.
Coventry Friends of the Earth supported HDRA with a rally on 21 April, and a packed public meeting organised by Wolston Parish Council found the majority against the GM crop.
Congratulations to HDRA and to all the local organisations and individuals who rallied to their support.

Fodder maize commonly cross pollinates with the type of sweetcorn HDRA is growing, and the flowering periods overlap.
HDRA does not feel that the trials answer the questions that we have about the safety of GM crops.
